Relay For Life Brings
In Over $160,000
By Jana A. Mitcham
Few eyes were dry Friday
evening as cancer survi
vors made a lap around the
track at the East Jackson
Comprehensive High School
to the tune of “Celebrate!”
Dressed in vivid purple,
survivors who passed near
the main stage microphone
announced their names and
the length of time each had
beat cancer.
Forty-two teams had
campsites and tents set up
around the track’s perim
eter, with team members
ready to walk throughout the
night to raise funds for the
American Cancer Society.
By Saturday morning clean
up, the numbers had been
tallied, with the total raised
given as $168,000. The
fund-raising will continue
throughout the summer, said
committee member Sandra
Fite, adding that the goal
for this year’s relay, in such
tough financial times, was to
raise $150,000.
The evening’s events began
as the Jackson County
Comprehensive High School
JROTC presented the col
ors and Larry Banks, com
mittee member and family
member of cancer survivors,
welcomed the crowd to the
16th annual Jackson County
Relay for Life.
“Hello, Jackson County!”
Banks shouted.
“These are more than just
purple shirts,” Banks noted
of the survivors lined up
for the opening lap. 'This is
someone who hasn’t given
up ... We must never give in
or give up.”
With emotion in his voice,
Banks said, “50 percent of
my family has heard those
words, 'You have cancer.’
Today, 100 percent are well.”
Banks noted that the
American Cancer Survivor
“has 90 more people surviv
ing cancer today than yes
terday.”
Howard Banks, another
cancer survivor, shared his
story, as did relay honorary
co-chairs and cancer survi
vors Priscilla Daves and Jim
Joiner.
