Honors / Awards
• Third Annual Eagle Run, Sept. 19
East Jackson will play host to the third
annual Eagles Run, coming up on Saturday,
September 19.
This GHSA sanctioned event gets started
at 9:30 a.m. for the boys and 10:15 a.m. for
the girls. The JV races will follow the varsity
races with the boys and girls starting at 11 a.m.
The top 20 individuals of the varsity races will
receive a medal and the top five of the JV races
will receive a medal.
The top five teams of each varsity race will
receive an award and the first place JV team
will receive an award in each race.
The cost of this race will be $30 per team,
and $60 for a varsity boys and girls squad.
There is no charge for the JV teams if the var
sity squads are entered and paid. The charge
for non-varsity squads will be the same as var
sity fees if no varsity enters.

• Jackson County Rec Registration Open
With summer upon us, the
Jackson County Park and Rec
department has several camps
and clinics on tap, as well as
registration for fall sports.
Golf Camp will be held June
15-18 from 9 a.m.-noon for
ages 9-12. Cost for beginners
is $125, $65 for those who
already have a set of clubs.
Soccer camp will be held
July 13-17, hosted by Euro
Tech Soccer and held at Lamar
Murphy Park. Cost is $100,
$80 for Magic Micro ages 4-6.
Basketball Clinic/League will
be held June 22-25 at Benton
gym or West Jackson Primary
gym for ages 8-12. Cost is
$65.
Football clinic/camp will be
held on July 27-31 for ages 7-12
from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Cost is
$65.
Cheerleading clinic/camp
will be held on July 27-31 for
ages 7-12 from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Cost is $65.

June 8 and run through Aug
8 for football, cheerleading,
soccer, fall fast pitch and fall

The Commerce Parks and
Recreation Department has
announced its schedule of
summer activities for the ben
efit of the youth of the com
munity.
Many of the activities are
contingent upon continued
interest shown through reg
istration. Unless otherwise
noted, registration for all
activities listed may be made
at the Recreation Office at
American Veterans Memorial
Park on Carson Street, week
days from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00
p.m. Registration is first come,
first serve basis until each
activity is filled. For addition
al information, call 706-335-

Recreation Swimming
The American Veterans
Memorial Park Aquatics
Center is open to the public
Friday, July 31. Weather per
mitting; the pool will be open
Monday through Saturdays
from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
and closed on Sundays. Daily
admission is $1.50 for pre
school through high school
youth and $3 for adults.
Season passes for individu
als and families are available
at the Recreation Office. The
pool is available for private
party rentals on Saturday eve
nings in June and July. Call for
information.
There is no wading pool.
Young children not potty-
trained must wear air-tight rub
ber pants or diapers designed
especially for swimming. All
children age 8 and under
must be actively supervised
by an individual 16 or older.
Swimsuits are required to
enter the pool; street clothes
are not allowed.
Water Aerobics
No advance registration is
required.
This is a water exercise class
for adult men and women
that is particularly beneficial
to individuals with arthritis,
muscular disease, osteoporo
sis, heart disease, and recov
ery from joint replacement as
well as other disabling injuries.
Water aerobics strengthens all
muscles and joints without the
stress, stiffness and soreness
which accompany land exer
cise programs.
Workouts will require par
ticipants to use their arms,
legs, hips and neck and will
elevate the heart rate through
the buoyancy of the water.
Experienced water aerobics
instructor Sharon Pruitt will
lead the class on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays at
11:00 a.m. The class are ongo
ing through early August. Cost
is $3 per class at the gate. No
children will be admitted to or
allowed present during class.
Champ Chaney
Basketball Camp
Registration is limited.
The camp will stress the
fundamentals of the game
to strengthen players' foun
dational skills. Former
Commerce Middle School
coach Sam Chaney is the
instructor. Chaney coached
school teams for 31 years,
also serving for seven years
on the staff of instructors for
a basketball camp managed
by former LA Lakers player
Tracy Murray. The camp is
designed for girls and boys
who are rising fourth graders
through rising eighth graders.
The camp will run 10:00 a.m.
until noon July 20-24 at the
middle school gym.
Registration fee for city resi
dents is $40, non-city is $60.

Designed for girls in rising
third through eighth grades,
the instructors, coach Eddie
McCurley and coach Barry
Cook, will stress the funda
mentals of basketball and
work individually with the
participants to improve their
skills in basketball. McCurley
has vast experience and
knowledge of basketball. He
has won four state champion
ships and coached teams at
Gardner-Webb University. In
addition, the girls will receive
instruction from college play
ers who will visit the camp.

in the fee is a camp T-shirt
and awards given for competi

The camp is scheduled for
June 15-19 from 9:00 a.m. until

eral activities for the autumn

Flag football and cheer
leading for ages six through
eight year-olds, tackle foot
ball and cheerleading for ages
nine through 12 year-olds and
soccer for ages four and up.
Registration for these activi
ties will begin July 13.
• Commerce-Jefferson Football Reunion, Aug. 28
A Commerce-Jefferson football reunion is
being planned for the Friday, Aug. 28 game
between the cross-river rivals at Memorial
Stadium in Jefferson.
That will be the season opener for both
teams.
Former Dragon Benny Tompkins, who
played 1954-56, is the initiator of the event
and would like for all former Jefferson foot
ball players from 1947-1959 to participate.
1947 was Jefferson’s inaugural football sea
son.
Former Dragon football players from
that time span should contact Tompkins at
706-369-7960. His mailing address is 2467
Lebanon Church Road, Jefferson, 30549.
Tompkins would also like as many for
mer Commerce players who played against
Jefferson from 1950 through 1959 to take part
in the reunion as well.

the 1955-57 Commerce squads, is the contact
