Crime, Budget
Lead DOT To
Close Rest Areas
A combination of
increased crime and high
maintenance is lead
ing the Department of
Transportation to close two
rest areas on Interstate 85.
The DOT announced last
week that the rest area on
1-85 northbound in Franklin
County and 1-85 south
bound in Gwinnett County
will close Aug. 25.
“Many factors have gone
into the decision to close
these rest areas. Criminal
activity is rising at these
locations. Safety is definite
ly a factor in this decision.
Private development along
the interstate now provides
the services offered by rest
areas. The condition of the
rest areas has deteriorated
and the cost to maintain
them is high," explained
DOT district engineer
Russell McMurry.
The welcome center/rest
stop on 1-85 southbound
in Hart County will remain
open.

Hull Pizzeria
Responds
To Lawsuit
A lawyer for a Hull pizze
ria says allegations of sexu
al harassment by a former
employee are an attempt at
retribution for the worker’s
prior termination at the eat
ing establishment.
A federal sexual harass
ment lawsuit was filed
recently against the own
ers of the Pizza and Sub
Express Inc., located at
8727 Hwy. 29 South near
the red light in Hull.
According to the docu
ments filed by the Equal
Employment Opportunity
Commission, on behalf of
a female employee who
worked at the pizzeria
beginning in October 2007,
the commission alleges that
the Pizzeria subjected the
employee to a “sexually
hostile work environment’’
by the general manager
and that the owners, failed
to take prompt effective
remedial action to end the
harassment.
Michael Daniel, attorney
for Pizza and Sub Express,
says the restaurant “vehe
mently denies that it or
its employees committed
wrong doing against the
charging party.’’
“The restaurant termi
nated the charging party’s
employment because she
engaged in a fight with
another employee while
at work,’’ said Daniel in a
press release about the law
suit. 'The charging party’s
discrimination complaint
is apparently an attempt
to seek retribution for that
proper termination.’’
The suit seeks back pay
and other unspecified com
pensation for the employee,
a permanent injunction to
order the business to cease
from “engaging in sexual
harassment against employ
ees, as well as engaging in
any other employment prac
tice which discriminates
on the basis of sex,’’ and
to “institute and carry out
policies, practices and pro
grams which provide equal
employment opportunities
for all employees and which
eradicate the effects of its
past and present unlawful
employment practices.’’
