“We are very proud of the
boys for their tempo run and
staying together,” said coach
Bob Roller “We were 16 sec
onds apart from number one
to number five and we are
working our way to improving
that with a lower team time
at Carrollton than we had at
NEGA in Athens.”
“Our girls placed fifth in the
same race,” Roller added. "We
improved as a team, but we still
are not where we want to be at
this point of the season. We will
be missing two of our girls for
the Eagle Run due to a death
in the family, but we will work
hard to be competitive. It will
be time for others to step up
and give us a star effort."

Lady Eagles Look For
Consistency At Net
By Brandon Reed
Inconsistency continues
to dog the East Jackson
Lady Eagles volleyball
team. The Eagles dropped
matches against Rabun
County, Tallulah Falls and
East Hall during the past
week.
Their next chance to turn
things around will come
Thursday, as they travel
to Lakeview Academy to
face the Lady Lions and
Gainesville. Match time is
5 p.m.
The Lady Eagles started
last week at Rabun County
where they came away with
a 2-0 loss with set scores of
18-25 and 12-25.
Haley Simmons scored
six points on serve, and
had one kill. Brittany Smith
recorded nine digs.
On Thursday, the Lady
Eagles hosted to Tallulah
Falls, losing 2-1 with set
scores of 16-25, 25-19 and
12-25.
Jaclyn Klerk had nine
points on serve with sev
eral aces, including one
to clinch the second set.
Rebekah Poponi had six
points on serve.
East Jackson also hosted
East Hall on Thursday, los
ing 2-0 with set scores of
10-25 and 19-25.
The Lady Eagles trailed
15-7 before getting five in
a row of Brittany Smith’s
serves. They got to within
one point at 19-18, but the
Lady Vikings scored five
in a row to put the match
away.
“Last week was the first
time all season we've had
everyone at 100 percent
health,” said coach Tim
Thomas. “Tuesday at Rabun
was our first chance to see
the team we'd picked six
weeks ago in action. They
looked pretty good overall
but inconsistent.
“Now that they're all

healthy, those seven that we
saw at Rabun for the first
time need to play together
for a while and get more
comfortable working with
one another.”
“Our hitters looked bet
ter last week but we still
need to learn how to hit
down on the ball better,”
Thomas said. “Our attacks
don't have enough power,
which makes it easier for
the other team to dig the
ball and get it back to us.”
Thomas said on Thursday
that the team looked great
at times, but not very good
at others.
“Again, (we’re) inconsis
tent,” he said. “We looked
good to start against
Tallulah in set one but then
fell off a bit. We looked
really good in set two and
built up a lot of momentum
heading in to set three, but
we just fell apart after that.
“Although we're obvious
ly not where we'd like to
be in terms of wins, we're
excited about how the pro
gram is still progressing
and becoming better. We're
averaging 30 percent more
points per set over last year,
and we've already scored in
the 20s three times as much
as we did in all of 2008.”
Thomas said the greatest
improvement has been in
team chemistry.
“These girls enjoy playing
together, and we couldn't
say that much last year. Now
that they have that going in
their favor and we've finally
got everyone healthy, we
hope to finally start seeing
what we expected from this
team when we made our
cuts back in early August.”
The Lady Eagles were
slated to travel to Madison
County to face the Lady
Red Raiders and Winder
Barrow Tuesday in non-area
play. Results were unavail
able at press time.

in the top ten. Andrew Brookshire led the Tigers
with a second-place finish in 22:14 followed by Nick
Cole in fourth place at 23:03, Jeffery Henderson
taking fifth at 23:17 and Ethan Thomas in sixth with
a 23:26 finish.
“I was pleased with how these four ran,” said Hale.
“We need to develop a few more runners to close
the gap after these runners.”
Also competing for the Tigers were Juan Toribio
(27:02), Nick Henderson (27:27) and Zan Peek
(27:46). Jonathan Leffew finished in 29:42 while
Cody Nation and Thomas Sweeney were a second
apart at 34:23 and 34:24 respectively.
Commerce’s next cross-country meet is at Madison
on Thursday, Sept. 24.
