For 2009 Season
Sealey’s Deer Cooler,
Jefferson, will again par
ticipate in the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources’ Hunters for the
Hungry Program.
Sealey’s, located on South
Apple Valley Road, will
accept deer through Jan.
15 during normal business
hours.
“The Georgia Hunters for
the Hungry program is one
opportunity for hunters to
demonstrate their generosity
by sharing their harvest with
those in need,’’ said John
Bowers, Wildlife Resources
Division assistant chief of
game management. “The
division is proud to be a
cooperator in this public-
private partnership and to
work with the many part
ners who make it possible
each year.’’
The DNR has added a new
wrinkle this year. Hunters
may also donate a portion
of their processed venison
to the program.
Last year’s program result
ed in the donation of nearly
30,000 pounds of venison
to food banks across the
state. This meat provided
more than 150,000 meals for
needy Georgians. Since the
program’s inception in 1993,
more than 257,000 pounds
of venison have been donat
ed through processors like
Sealey’s.
All hunters who donate a
deer will be entered into
a drawing for a deer rifle,
sponsored by the Georgia
Wildlife Federation.
Seven years after it was
dedicated, the Bear Creek
Reservoir in southwest
Jackson County is now
open to fishermen and
their boats.
The long-awaited boat
ramp on the 505-acre
water supply reservoir
opened last Friday morn
ing at 6:00.
Through September, the
facility, which includes
rest rooms and a kiosk
for an attendant, will be
open Wednesdays from 6
a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays
from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
No boats with gasoline
motors will be allowed on
the lake, and boats longer
than 18 feet are currently
banned.
In the first weekend, the
recreation department
sold 29 yearly passes,
admitted 70 adults and 22
children or disabled per
sons, and had 46 boats
launched, reported Ricky
Sanders director.
"It should pick up this
weekend as more boaters
find out," he said.
The county also issued
permits to eight property
owners.
Starting Oct. 1 and
continuing through
March, hours will be
6-5 Wednesdays and 6-6
Saturdays and Sundays.
There is a $5 fee for
each adult or $3 for chil
dren, senior citizens and
the disabled, but those
planning to use the lake
frequently can get a year
ly pass for $25.
