Book Vine
Meets This Friday
The library’s book club will
meet this Friday, Sept. 18,
at 1:30 to discuss the novel
“The Guernsey Literary and
Potato Peel Pie Society.’' The
story begins in 1946 when
author Juliet Ashton receives
a letter from the founding
member of the society. The
epistolary novel evolves
with the captivating stories
of daily life during Nazi
occupation on the island of
Guernsey.
The novel was written by
editor and librarian Mary
Ann Shaffer who had trav
eled to Guernsey in 1976.
Delayed on the island by
inclement weather, she read
practically all of the books
in the Guernsey airport
bookstore. One book in par
ticular, “Jersey in the Jack-
Boot ,” sparked her interest
in German occupation of
the English Channel islands.
Years later, she began writ
ing “The Guernsey Literary
and Potato Peel Pie Society.’’
The manuscript was finished
by her niece Annie Barrows,
a children’s author, after
Shaffer became ill. She died
in 2008, but she left behind
this vivid portrayal.
Turn Off The TV
September 20-26 is the
next national “Turn off your
TV' week. The library staff
encourages patrons to check
out some of the new books.
Sue Monk Kidd and
her daughter, Ann Kidd
Taylor, have teamed up
to write “Traveling with
Pomegranates,’’ a commen
tary on life from the per
spective of a mother and
daughter. In “The Last Song,’’
Nicholas Sparks writes
about the reconciliation of
a daughter and her father.
Haywood Smith’s “Ladies
of the Lake’’ describes how
four sisters are required
to spend the summer at a
lodge in order to inherit
their grandmother’s lake
estate. James Patterson’s
latest, “Alex Cross’s Trial’’
is actually the story of one
of Alex’s relatives, Ben
Corbett, who is assigned to
investigate the resurgence
of the KKK in Mississippi in
1906. Other recent releases
include David Ellis’ novel
“The Hidden Man’’ and
Kathy Reichs’ “206 Bones.’’

Miriam Gilberg
Wound Healing Center
After several biopsies of a spot on her leg, Miriam Gilberg was
left with a wound that would not heal. After months of pain and
aggravation, Miriam started treatment at The Wound Healing
Center of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). Part of her
therapy included hyperbarics, and in 4 short months, her wound
was completely healed.
“My wound hurt terribly before,” says Miriam. “In fact, I was even
on pain pills and was afraid I might lose my leg all together. But
now, I am back to my old self, feeling great, doing my exercises,
going to the theater and serving on the entertainment committee
in my neighborhood.”
The Wound Healing Center of NGMC offers state-of-the-art
therapies such as bio-engineered skin grafts and hyperbaric
oxygen therapy supervised by specially trained physicians.
For more information about the Wound Healing Center at NGMC
