library To Display 'Banned' Books
The Commerce Public
Library will feature a dis
play of books that have
been banned at one time or
another. Many books that
are now considered classics
faced censorship for vari
ous reasons. Alice Walker’s
“The Color Purple,’’ for
example, was banned for
violent content.
Numerous books have
been banned by various
countries for political rea
sons. Some of these books
include “Animal Farm,’’
“Doctor Zhivago,’’ and
Hemingway’s “For Whom
the Bell Tolls.’’ Several
books in the “Harry Potter’’
series were banned by
schools due to themes of
sorcery and witchcraft.
Other notable banned
books include “A Wrinkle
in Time,’’ “Catch-22,’’ “The
Catcher in the Rye,’’ “How
to Eat Fried Worms’’ and
“Little Red Riding Hood.”
Just For Kids
Carolyn Cook will read
several short stories for ele
mentary school age children
Friday, Sept. 25, at 4:00 p.m.
The featured book will be
“The Adventures of Captain
Underpants’’ by Dav Pilkey.
According to the American
Library Association, the
Captain Underpants series
was banned in some schools
for insensitivity and for
being unsuited to the age
group, as well as encour
aging children to disobey
authority.
New Books
Dan Brown has released
his much-anticipated book,
“The Lost Symbol,’’ which
is the follow up to “The Da
Vinci Code.’’ The thrill ride
begins when Harvard sym-
bologist Robert Langdon
gives a lecture at the U.S.
Capitol Building, and an
object — artfully encoded
with five symbols—is discov
ered . After Langdon’s men
tor, Peter Solomon, is kid
napped, Langdon embarks
on a journey through a laby
rinth of ancient codes and
secrets.
E.L. Doctorow’s “Homer
& Langley’’ is the fictional
portrayal of the real life
Collyer brothers who lived
as recluses in their Fifth
Avenue mansion. The
brothers became famous
for their compulsive hoard
ing of newspapers, books,
furniture and many other
items. They even set booby
traps to protect against
intruders. In “The Missing,’’
which is Beverly Lewis’
sequel to “The Secret,’’
21-year-old Grace Byler is
on a mission to find her
mother who recently dis
appeared from the Amish
community.

Special Quilters Program Is Thursday
Anyone with an old quilt they’d like to show off is invited
to a special program of the Cold Sassy Quilters Thursday,
Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Commerce Public Library.
“Somewhere in an old trunk, in the back of a closet, on a
bed, or heaven forbid, in the dog’s house, there might be a
quilt that is old, or a favorite, or special that you might want
to show to other folks,’’ says member Claire Gaus.
Anyone who has interest or curiosity about quilts is
invited. Each quilt displayed will have a story.
