council member most vocal
about not being opposed to
the sale of beer and wine in
the town, said she based her
decision on the input from
the community.
“The thing that really
persuaded me to vote as
I did tonight was the lack
or absence of support in
the community for this ordi
nance," she said. “That was
the basis for my decision."
Dorsey thanked the citi
zens for their input and
said, “I know this was a big
issue to everybody and I
thank you for your sup
port. We felt like every
thing would work out even
tually."
Baker, who said at an earli
er meeting that he opposed
the ordinance, stated, “My
slogan was to be a voice of
the people and that is what
I intend to do."

will add sidewalks from the
Maysville Public Library
to Maysville Elementary
School.
Thomas said the plans
are being reviewed by the
Georgia Department of
Transportation and, once
approved, companies will
bid on the project.
“These projects will bring
much-needed repair and
maintenance to roads,
intersections and bridges,"
Perdue said. “The federal
funds will strengthen our
transportation network
and help us to better serve
Georgians."

brary), “is about getting the
word out about libraries
and the services they offer,"
Harkness told the board.
The regional library has
until March 1 to spend the
money. If the project proves
successful, the foundation
may expand it nationwide.
Getting the word out is
also on Vicente’s agenda.
He showed the board book
marks created by local art
ist Mark Braught that the
library is giving out promot
ing its new web site, www.
commercelibrary.org.
Vicente reported that the
new site has generated traf
fic — and donations — from
as far away as Maryland
and California.
“People see the work we
are doing here. The people
at the library work very
hard," he said.
The bookmark will replace
the one previously given
out, which promotes the
regional library’s web site.
Vicente said staff member
Paige Young is talking with
principals at the Commerce
schools about Brainfuse, a
program offered through
the regional library to help
kids with homework.
“From the web site, you
can see around the world,"
Vicente said. “I feel proud
of this."
“If a child has a weak
ness in a certain subject,
he can go online and talk
to a teacher," noted board
member Sam Chaney. “She
won’t give him the answers,
but she’ll help him."
“It’s a great program,"
said Vicente, who added
that he’s had children tell
him they’ve used Brainfuse.
“We have an opportunity to
encourage people to have
a library card. We have an
opportunity to get kids to
use mentoring."
Harkness has talked with
Jackson County school offi
cials about the site, which is
available from 2 p.m. to 11
p.m. daily.
“They won’t do your home
work for you, but they will
help you," he said. “And if
you have a paper you’ve
done, you can send it in and
get feedback in 24 hours."
In other news, Vicente
reported that the library will
show two movies a month,
one for children and one for
adults, under the regional
library’s new movie license.
He also reported that the
library’s first Spanish class
is full, and four people have
signed up for the second
course.

VISIT...As I often do from
time to time, I recently took a
walk to observe our students
in class, having lunch in the
cafeteria, and playing on the
playground. When I came
back to the office I said to my
wife, “You know honey, I
thank the Lord for all the
great kids He has sent to
ACS."
Our faculty and staff have the
joy of working with these
students everyday. It is really
like one big happy family.
If you would like to see ACS
in action, please come for a
visit. We think you will like
what you see.
