Chamber Warns
Of Scam On
County Maps
The Jackson County Area
Chamber of Commerce
warns local businesses of a
potential scam.
“The chamber has been
aware of a sales representa
tive calling members stat
ing that they are selling
advertising on a new map
of Jackson County and that
it’s through the chamber,’’
said an email from Shane
Short, the chamber’s presi
dent. “Beware, they are not
calling on our behalf. If you
receive a call of this nature,
please know that they are
not a part of your cham
ber. The company calling is
known under a few different
names such as Universal
AdCom or Primiere.
“In the future, if someone
other than chamber staff
calls you and states that
they are acting on behalf of
the 'chamber of commerce,’
they are not unless we tell
you in advance. If this hap
pens, please get their con
tact information and let us
know.’’
The chamber is working
on a new Jackson County
map, but the map is being
produced in-house and all
advertising sales were done
by chamber staff members.

Weaver Pulls
Out Of State
Senate Race
One of the five candi
dates vying for an upcom
ing vacant seat in the state
senate has withdrawn from
the race.
Kenny Weaver, Hull,
announced his withdrawal
Tuesday from the District 47
state senate seat, currently
held by Ralph Hudgens —
who plans to run for state
insurance commissioner.
Senate District 47 compris
es all of Barrow, Oglethorpe
and Madison counties, and
part of Jackson, Elbert and
Clarke counties.
“After careful consid
eration I have decided to
withdraw from this race,’’
Weaver said in a statement.
“I appreciate the support
and encouragement that I
have received; however, I
recognize that this is not the
time for me to participate
in this race. I will continue
to support the Republican
Party and continue to work
individually towards the
political goals that have
been the keystones of my
campaign.’’
Weaver’s withdrawal leaves
Kelley Gary, Hoschton; Pat
Graham, Braselton; Shane
Coley, Winder; and Frank
Ginn, Madison County, as
candidates. Qualifying is in
April 2010.
Foundation
Gives Grant To
Peace Place
The Jackson EMC
Foundation has awarded
Peace Place — a Winder
domestic violence shelter —
a $8,910 grant to purchase
two furnaces for its transi
tional housing units.
Since opening in June
2000, Peace Place has
sheltered more than 1,600
women and children, pro
viding a variety of services
for them and the greater
community, as well as han
dling more than 12,000
crisis calls on its 24-hour
hotline. The organization’s
first transitional housing
was a four-apartment facil
ity.
As the apartment units
were being completed, two
side-by-side homes were
donated to Peace Place for
additional transitional hous
ing. The homes have been
renovated, but no funding
was available to replace the
heating units.
Peace Place serves
Jackson, Barrow and Banks
counties.
Foundation grants are
made possible by Jackson
EMC members’ contri
butions to the Operation
Round Up program, which
rounds up electric bills of
participating members to
the next dollar amount and
uses the spare change to do
charitable work.

Free HIV
Tests Available
At Health Depts.
Barrow, Clarke, Elbert,
Greene, Jackson, Madison,
Morgan, Oconee,
Oglethorpe and Walton
counties’ health depart
ments will provide free HIV
testing in recognition of
World AIDS Day Tuesday,
Dec. 1.
World AIDS Day is a
global campaign to stop the
spread of HIV/AIDS. The
Centers of Disease Control
and Prevention estimates
that there are 1 million
people living with HIV in
the U.S. One in five people
living with HIV does not
know it, and Georgia has
the eighth-highest reported
AIDS rate in the nation.
Knowing one’s own HIV
status is key to stopping
HIV/AIDS. When people
learn they are infected,
they can protect their own
health, receive life-saving
treatment and prevent the
spread of HIV to loved
ones.
Individuals interested in
getting free confidential
HIV testing should visit their
local health department or
call 1-800-4PD-HEFP.
