Banks Teacher Authors Shape Note Correction
Banks County music
teacher Samuel J. Hardman
has corrected the history
of shape note music nota
tion in America by docu
menting that Andrew Law
(1749-1821) was the first to
introduce the seven-shape
note system in 1809.
It was formerly thought
that Jesse B. Aikin was the
first to do so in 1846.
“Grove Dictionary of
Music and Musicians’’ will
include Hardman’s correc
tion in future editions.
The Banks County-
Commerce area has a long
history of shape note sing
ing, which remains in use
through the local Church
of Christ, the Phil Brown
Family and others. Hardman
is a teacher of piano, organ
and harp, and is a found
ing teacher of the National
Music Certificate Program.
