By Angela Gary
The Jackson County
Board of Commissioners
will review the proposed
new district maps when it
meets at 6 p.m. on Monday,
Jan. 16, at the courthouse.
County officials have
been working for months
on the redistricting plan
and say they are now
ready to move forward.
Because of growth since
2000, the current voting
districts are badly out of
population balance. And
with the 2012 local elec
tions approaching, the
commissioners want the
new maps ready to sub
mit to the Georgia General
Assembly during its 2012
session for approval.
In December, members
of the local Republican
each month (unless the
meeting is rescheduled
due to a holiday or con
flict).
•recognized the recent
graduates of the fire recruit
training class.
On Jan. 16 Agenda
At the Jan. 3 meeting,
the BOC also discussed
several items that will be
on the agenda for a vote at
the Jan. 16 meeting, includ
ing the following:
• an intergovernmen
tal agreement with the
chamber of commerce to
provide economic devel
opment services to the
county in the amount of
$100,000.
• an ordinance to re
adopt the county building
codes to include an update
of new state mandates and
codes.
• renaming a portion
of Maddox Road to Old
Maddox Road.
• agreements with Banks
County and Barrow
County governments on
the joint juvenile court ser
vices.
• a resolution for disaster
awareness and a prepared
ness plan as recommend
ed by EMS director Steve
Nichols.
Party accused the BOC
of not moving quickly
enough to get its districts
redrawn. Kelley Gary and
Ron Johnson seem to
think that the BOC has
been delaying the map
update.
“You guys are dragging
your feet on this and it’s
one of the most important
things,’’ Johnson said at
the December meeting.
