Commerce officer hurt
when patrol car wrecks
A Commerce police officer was injured Saturday morning
when he lost control of a city Dodge Charger police car
on Hwy. 15 and struck a utility pole. He was treated and
released at an Athens hospital for back pains.
“We believe there was a medical issue,” said police chief
Brandon Sellers.
According to Sellers, officer Greg Atkins, 28, was on his
way to the Jackson County Courthouse to get some war
rants signed. A truck in front of him turned left, and Atkins’
vehicle drifted left, hit a road sign and hit a utility pole. Sell
ers said the in-car video indicated that Atkins was doing 23
miles per hour when he struck the pole.
The 2013 Dodge Charger, which had 93,000 miles on it.
is totaled. Sellers said. Atkins remains out on medical leave.
JCSO charges 2 with
multiple drug offenses
Two Jackson County deputies who checked out a “sus
picious” vehicle on Haggard Road Sunday morning. April
10. wound up arresting two men on a host of drug charges.
The officers were patrolling the area of Ridgeway Church
Road in the vicinity of Haggard Road when they encoun
tered a GMC Yukon stopped in the road, with one man
approaching the vehicle from the wood line.
The officers approached the vehicle and immediately
noted the smell of marijuana.
The deputies learned that the men were returning to the
scene of an accident earlier that morning on Interstate 85,
which runs parallel to Haggard Road.
The driver. David Shoemaker, 29. 20 McDonald Drive,
Byron, presented his driver’s license, but the passenger
gave the name “Nathaniel Mize,” with a birth date of April
23, 1985, yet claimed to be 30 years old, then produced an
ID with that name but a birth date in 1982.
The conflicting information led the officer to ask “Mize”
to exit the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the other officer got permission to search the
vehicle, so the first officer asked “Mize” if he had anything
illegal in the vehicle, and “Mize” pointed to under the pas
senger seat.
The officer with the passenger patted him down and
found a container with a white crystalline substance, where
upon the officer arrested him for violation of the Georgia
Controlled Substances Act. He also found $796 in cash.
A search of the vehicle turned up two small begs and one
larger bag of suspected marijuana, two glass pipes, multiple
bottles of prescription medications, and a backpack. Inside
the backpack, officers found two quart-size plastic bags
containing suspected methamphetamine, a gallon bag coa
taining suspected meth, multiple smaller bags, a set of brass
knuckles, a cylinder with a brown tar-like substance, a vari
ety of jewelry, a guitar, a black AR-15 Colt Law Enforcement
carbine, which was determined to have been stolen in Hall
County, and a quantity of ammunition.
A press release from the JCSO said deputies recovered
approximately three pounds of methamphetamine and
several ounces of marijuana.
The arrest report indicated that the passenger, previously
identified as Mize, was actually Adam Richard Tollison. 25,
1565 Mount McKinley Drive, Grayson, and officers learned
he had an outstanding warrant from Gwinnett County.
The men are charged with trafficking methamphetamine,
possession of methamphetamine, possession of metham
phetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana,
possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime,
theft by receiving stolen property, failure to keep drugs in
their original container and possession of marijuana with
intent to distribute.
Tollison was also charged with giving false information
to police.
Shoemaker is being held on a $55,000 bond and Tollison
is being held without bond.
