event was held at the Atlanta Freight Depot and
is designed to allow entrepreneurs to showcase

Jackson EMC seeks Washington tour applicants
Jackson Electric Member
ship Corporation (EMC) is
seeking applicants and will
send four exceptional stu
dent delegates on an all-ex-
penses-paid leadership trip to
Washington, D.C., June 9-16
for the 2016 Washington Youth
Tour (WYT). Interested appli
cants should contact their
school guidance counselor or
leadership department.
Candidates must be a high
school sophomore or junior at
least 16 years of age at the time
of the trip, with demonstrat
ed leadership and academic
excellence who are interested
in learning more about leader
ship, civic service, history and
U.S. government.
Nominees will be selected
by their high school guidance
counselors/educators or may
be home-schooled students
living in a Jackson EMC mem
ber’s household who are inter
ested in the program.
The four winners will join
more than 100 of Georgia’s
brightest students and roughly
1,600 students sponsored by
electric membership coopera
tives across the country.
“WYT is a tripof-a-lifetime
opportunity for students,”
said Kay Parks, public/com
munity relations representa
tive. “Beyond the educational
value of the trip and the back
stage pass to countless his
torical and inspirational sites,
students are given the opportu
nity to develop and grow their
leadership skills, benefiting
their future.”
Only one semi-finalist will
be selected from any high
school. Applicants must sub
mit their application packet to
their counselor or guidance
office. Deadlines vary by
school.

(EMC) Bright Ideas pro
gram offers grants for class
room projects developed
by state certified educators
in a public middle schools
(grades sixth-eighth) with
in Jackson EMC’s service
area.
Educators can earn from
$100 to $2,000 for class
room projects that cannot
be funded through general
education funds.
“We know budgets can
hinder classroom projects
and everyone has heard
stories of educators dipping
into their own pockets to
pay for their creative lesson
plans,” said Chip Jakins,
Jackson EMC president and
CEO. “We think this pro
gram will energize innova
tive teaching and the class
room learning experience.”

Teachers may submit
their 2016 applications
online by midnight Fri
day, June 3. Applications
received by the early bird
deadline of Friday, April 29,
will be entered in a prize
drawing for one of two $250
VISA gift cards. Grants will
be judged by an outside
panel of education experts,
and grants will be awarded
this fall.
In 2015, Jackson EMC
distributed $50,000 in
Bright Ideas grants to 24
schools in nine school sys
tems in the cooperative’s

related services to nearly
220,000 meters in Banks,

will be held at Banks County
Primary School on Wednes
day May 11.
The following items need
to be brought when register
ing: Child’s certified birth cer
tificate, Social Security card,
immunization form 3231,
proof of address that include
physical 911 address and par
ent/guardian photo ID.
4-H summer camps
now taking signups
Several 4-H camps will be
available this summer.
Locals that are interested
in attending a 4-H camp
can sign up now by con
tacting Jackson County 4-H

sion Service Office is locat
ed at 102 Cloverleaf Circle,
Jefferson.
4-H CAMP OFFERINGS
Camp is planned for
fourth-sixth graders at
Camp Wahsega 4-H Center
from June 13-17. The cost
is $320.
Two camps are planned
for sixth-eighth graders.
Junior Camp Burton on
Tybee Island will be held
July 18-22 and costs $350.
Wilderness Challenge
Camp will be held at Camp
Wahsega 4-H Center on July
4-8 and will cost $350.
Two camps are also
planned for ninth-12th
graders. Senior Leadership
Camp will be held at the
Rock Eagle 4-H Center on
May 30-June 3 and will
cost $350. Senior Extreme
Camp will be held at Rock
Eagle 4-H Center on June
6-8 and will cost $320.
