Seek wisdom and live
Do you ever have
a hard time falling
asleep? Maybe you can
get to sleep just fine
but a few hours later
you are wide awake.
I’ve experienced both
of those, but when it
happens on Saturday
night, I quickly flip on
the television to hear
Andy Stanley.
This week’s mes
sage had me dissecting Proverbs 1 most
of the week. Stanley talked about mak
ing decisions. He encouraged listen
ers to be wise when making choices
because we know they can affect the
rest of our lives.
Here’s a question from Stan
ley. “What is the wise thing to do?” He
says to meditate on the following. “In
light of my past experience, my current
circumstances and my future hopes and
dreams, what is the wise thing to do?”
Wow! I wish someone would have
given me this information a long time
ago. If we seriously ponder that question
when making decisions, my guess is we
would not have dealt with the conse
quences from poor decision making at
times in our lives. Like me, I am sure you
can think of so many examples.
If we look in Proverbs 1:7, we read that
the fear of the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom. When we think of fear we think
of being afraid, but here I think Solo
mon is taking about a reverence and
obedience to our Heavenly Father who
formed the world as well as you and me.
This chapter also talks of four groups
of people and Stanley gave a sound defi
nition of each of them. Simple, foolish,
mockers, and wise are described. A sim
ple person has simple ways and takes
people at face value. When we were
young we believed everything people
told us, and at times, we ended up
with a broken heart. A foolish person
is someone who knows to do right but
has the pull of the world so strongly
that he or she knowingly makes the
wrong choice because they want to. A
mocker is one who knows to do right
but is an open critic to God and His
people. Then we have the wise person.
That type of person will obey the Lord
and seeks knowledge.
Take a few moments to assess the
type of person you are today. Where
ever we find ourselves making a deci
sion that will affect our lives today or
forever, my prayer is God will give us
the strength to go after wisdom with
everything we have within us.
Proverbs 7 describes the simple man
as an oxen going to the slaughter. Prov
erbs 26:11 says fools repeat their folly
just as a dog returns to its vomit. Prov
erbs 9:28 reminds us that mockers will
hate us. But there is much hope for the
wise.
Are you wise? Proverbs 10:23 says a
person of understanding delights in wis
dom, while Proverbs 13:20 admonishes
us to walk with the wise and we will
become wise.
Get in the Word. Read Proverbs which
is inspired by the Holy Spirit and written
by one of the wisest men to ever live.
Seek wisdom and live. Seek wisdom
and avoid the unnecessary pitfalls of
our past. Remember if anyone seeks
wisdom God will liberally grant it to
each of us.
