School may be out
for summer, but sever

last week learning out
side the classroom. The
inaugural 212 Degrees
of Excellence Youth
Skills Camp concluded
on Thursday following
a week of courses on
everything from how to

investments.
The camp, organized
by Leland M. Smith
(founder and chief
instructor) and Sande
Bailey, was open to
children from eight-16.
Smith, a retired mil
itary service member,
has previously worked
with veterans for work
force training. He said
he saw the same need
to teach those skills in
children.
Smith said the camp
is the first of its kind in
the area and gives local
students the opportuni
ty to learn things they
don’t typically see in
a school classroom set
ting.
Campers met in the
training room of the
Jackson County Sher
iffs Office to learn
about the “power of the
knot,” investing, “think
like a woman, act like a
lady,” health and well
ness and career man
agement. They learned
how to write and present
speeches, opportunity
costs of different invest
ments and how to dress
professionally.
Campers also took
a tour of the Jackson
County Courthouse,
along with the jail.
The camp conclud
ed with a graduation,
and campers showcased
their newly learned
skills for their parents.
Several people spoke
at the graduation,
including sheriff Janis
Mangum, who talked
about life choices and
their consequences.
Gwinnett Judge Rod
ney Harris told students
to remember the “Four
P’s” - pride, poise, per
sistence and parents. He
also thanked the camp
organizers, campers and
their parents.
“This is where you
start beings successful.”
he said to the campers.
This is the first year
of the camp and Smith
said it could be expand
ed in the future.
