True friends are a blessing
I remember
bidding fare
well to my high
school friends
with grandeur
plans of keeping
our friendships
alive no matter
what happened.
Well within a few
years, many of
us had charted
our own course
and rarely stayed
in contact.
I’ll never forget the
impact my young friends
had on my life, and I was
somewhat crushed when
we didn’t stay in touch. I
quickly determined not
to live in the past as I
looked around me. God
had and still does place
important people in my
life. It seems God always
surrounds me with
good people with whom
I can form a bond on
one level or another. At
times those friendships
continue to blossom
and at other times they
too were gone in a sea
son. I’ll admit it is hard
when someone moves to
another job or across the
country.
Little did
I know but
God was pre
paring me
for a journey
with seasonal
friendships in
my work with
women in
addiction. I see
these ladies
once or twice
a week. Some
of them become like sis
ters to me, while others
are most like a daughter.
The bottom line is we
become friends and I am
blessed to share so many
victories as they grow in
the Lord.
That’s what a Christian
rehabilitation program
should be about. First
we teach these women
about the Lord. Next
it’s about life skills so
they can go out into the
world and prosper in all
they do. I watch women
get back into the work
force, get a car, and even
buy a home. I see God
restore relationships so
these ladies are reunited
with their families. I see
moms raise their chil
dren. It is such a bless
ing, but there is also a
time for me to let go.
That’s not always an easy
thing to do. While I miss
them when they move
back to Colorado or Law-
renceville, I know God
has entrusted me with
this small season of their
life. I’ve got to be strong.
It’s not all said and
done. There are com
munications that make
it all worthwhile. Just
this week I got a picture
of a mom holding her
baby. At that moment I
took a trip down memo
ry lane and remembered
when we prayed about
that very situation. It’s
also great when I get a
phone call from a friend
telling me she’s going
into business in the area
of personal fitness. Yet
again I find myself beam
ing because another one
of my friends has found
grace in living for the
Lord.
I am thankful for our
time together, but I am so,
so grateful for the lifelong
friendships that I know
have been ordained by
Him. I need the sta
bility of knowing some
are going to be there for
years to come.
Friendships are truly a
blessing from the Lord. I
thank Him for the ones
who are stuck with me
for the long haul, and I
thank God for the one’s
He places in my life so I
can rejoice with them as
God puts their lives back
together.
Who are your close
friends? Are they forever
friends or someone God
has entrusted in you for
a season? That answer
will not always be clear,
so just appreciate those
God has put into your
pathway today. Love your
friends today. Be kind to
your friends today. Serve
your friends today. Most
of all thank the Lord for
the opportunity to pour
a godly influence into
these lives for as long as
He allows.
