the Senate Study Committee
on the Legislative Process.

study committee members
to take a closer look at the
needs of our state regard
ing the effectiveness of our
current legislative process,
as well as making sure our
state’s rural areas have prop
er access to the most recent
technologies.”

The Joint High-Speed
Broadband Communica
tions Access for All Geor
gians Study Committee was
created by the passage of
Senate Resolution 876 during
the 2016 legislative session.
As stated in the resolution,
the committee shall be com
prised of five members of the
Senate and five members of
the House. The joint study
committee will be tasked with
examining the conditions,
needs, issues and problems
of high-speed broadband
internet access. Economic
development, education and
health care are areas com
monly impacted by reduced
access to broadband com
munications, and profession
als from these areas will be
asked to share information
about specific barriers and
concerns. The joint study
committee is responsible for
submitting a report of find
ings and recommendations,
including proposed legisla
tion, by December 1, 2016.
SR 842 created the Sen
ate Study Committee on the
Legislative Process to eval
uate and determine an effi
cient, transparent method of
reviewing bills, amendments,
substitute bills, and confer
ence committee reports to
promote the confidence of
the citizens of the State of
Georgia in the legislative
process. The Committee is
composed of the President
Pro Tempore, the Majority
Leader, the Minority Leader,
and four other members of
the Senate appointed by the
President of the Senate, one
of whom is a member of the
minority party. The chairper
son, designated by the Pres
ident of the Senate, will call
all meetings of the commit
tees. The study committee is
responsible for submitting a
report of findings and recom
mendations, including pro
posed legislation, by Decem
ber 1, 2016.
Smith to speak at
historical society meeting
Dr. Daniel (Danny) Smith
will be the guest speaker at
the Banks County Historical
Society’s July 11 meeting at
7 p.m. in the historic court
house in downtown Homer.
A presentation will be
given on the Wofford family,
some of the earliest settlers
of Banks County.
A Banks County resident,
Dr. Smith is a professor of
Spanish and linguistics at
Clemson University in South
Carolina. Since childhood,
he has lived on his father’s
family’s land in northern
Banks County which was
once owned by the Wofford
family.

Program July 11 through

The Seamless Summer
Food Program provides
free meals/snacks to
students in Banks Coun
ty ages 18 years of age
and under. The BCHS
cafeteria will be open
for walk-ins for break
fast and lunch Monday

Arson
hotline
offered
Insurance and fire com
missioner Ralph Hudgens
wants to remind Geor
gians that the state has
a toll-free arson hotline,
1-800-282-5804, spon
sored by his office and
the Georgia Arson Con
trol Program.
Callers to the hotline
will be eligible for
rewards of up to $10,000 if
they provide information
leading to the arrest and
conviction of an arson
ist. According to Hud
gens, callers and reward
recipients may choose to
remain anonymous.
“We want to remind
Georgians of this incen
tive to report any informa
tion they may have about
a suspicious fire,” said
Hudgens. “In many cases,
investigators rely on evi
dence provided by witness
es to convict an arsonist.”
Since its inception
in 1979, the Georgia
Arson Control Board has
approved 560 rewards total
ing $1,617,850. The average
reward paid is $2,889.
In 2013, arsonists caused
$1.68 million in property
damage in Georgia.

FCA Challenge
honored to once again host the
FCA Northeast Georgia 7-on-7
Challenge this past week. This
great community event is spon
sored each year by the Fellow
ship of Christian Athletes.
Sixteen area teams - includ
ing ACS, Clarke Central, Ce
dar Shoals, Athens Academy,
Prince Avenue, Oconee County
and North Oconee - participat
ed in the competition. Over 600
athletes and 100 coaches took
part.
The best part of the day was
the timely message given by
former Pittsburgh Steeler, Tim
Lester. After Tim’s challenge,
over 30 young men stood up
in a call to dedicate their lives
to Christ. Praise God for the
work He is doing with our high
school athletes through the
FCA!
