Birds visit Benton
BY WESLEIGH SAGON
Deb and Bob Allwein of
No - “R” - Birds Parrot Sanc
tuary in Nicholson recent
ly brought their feathered
friends for a show and tell
visit at Benton Elementa
ry School. The bird show
was part of the Harold S.
Swindle Public Library’s
summer reading program
for children.
The Allwein’s operate an
aviary out of their home
and are dedicated to pro
viding a safe permanent
home for parrots that have
been abused and those
with behavioral or medical
issues. During the show,
Deb told children about
her bird rescues and how
to properly care for these
animals.
Deb lived in Colorado
when she first started work
ing with parrots in 1998.
“Within a year, I was
doing home visits and work
ing with behavior issues,”
she states on her website.
“I was invited to visit The
Gabriel Foundation where
I was exposed to multiple
parrot species with their
numerous personalities
and behaviors. My passion
grew, as did my experience,
exposure and understand
ing of parrots. Parrots lit
erally became my life; my
passion.
The Allweins later retired
and moved to Georgia
where they continued their
work with parrots.
“Thinking a parrot club
would be a great way to
network and share infor
mation with other parrot
people, I started Squawk-
talk parrot club,” she said.
“This was my way of intro
ducing our sanctuary to the
public. The club was good
for assessing the requests
we were receiving for help
with placement and sanctu
ary but I felt the sanctuary
got lost under the pretense
of a bird club. Although we
placed 16 birds in forever
homes, we more than dou
bled the number of birds
we had in sanctuary.”
This is when the Allweins
formed “no-”R”-birds”
sanctuary.
“In 2009, we acquired
our 501(c)(3) non profit
status,” Mrs. Allwein states.
“Home to over 24 parrots,
many with behavioral or
social issues and a few par
rots with medical issues, we
made the decision to focus
on the needs of our resi
dent birds. We provide the
best in parrot husbandry,
housing, environment and
stimulation as well as social
interaction and medical
care for our birds.”
