Motorist says man shot at him
A man on B. Whitfield
Road near Jefferson reported
last week that someone in a
field shot at him.
The man reported to a
deputy with the Jackson
County Sheriff’s Office that
he was not injured and that
he did not recognize the
man who shot at him.
Other incidents reported
to the sheriff’s office last
week include:
• A clerk at a Winder High
way business said a man in
the store made threatening
comments.
• a dispute at a Main Street,
Talmo, business when a for
mer employee came into
the store making negative
comments about the store to
other customers.
• A Holiday Cemetery
Road, Jefferson, resident
reported a dispute with her
landlord.
•a loud music complaint
at a J.S. Williamson Court,
Nicholson, residence.
• a dog locked in a vehicle
at a Banks Crossing business.
• a dispute between a
South Elm Street, Com
merce, man and his land
lord.
•An employee at a Banks
Crossing business said three
men came to the front door,
pulled down their pants and
pressed their back-side to the
glass of the door and then
left in a black Jeep.
•a loud music complaint
at an Old Harden Orchard
Circle, Commerce, location.
•A Cane Creek Road,
Athens, man said a woman
he knows made a gesture at
him and yelled a threatening
remark.
•A Grandview Drive, Jef
ferson, woman said some
one turned the water on in
her front yard and flooded it.
• a motorcycle found
wrecked in a ditch on New
Kings Bridge Road, Athens.
•windshield broken on a

Scammers offer man's
house for rent on Craigslist
Tanger, Northridge
join forces to
support charity
Tanger Outlets and Northridge Medical Center have
announced that they are partnering for the second year to
host a fundraising event on Sept. 29 to benefit the Cancer
Foundation of Northeast Georgia. The “PINK FASHION
GALA” will take place on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. at the Tanger Outlet Center in Commerce. The
evening will consist of a cocktail hour featuring appetizers
and treats, a silent auction, all followed by a fashion show.
Tickets to the PINK FASHION GALA will cost $20 and will
go on sale beginning Aug. 1 at both Tanger Outlets and the
Northridge Medical Center.
According to Tanger Outlets general manager Mark
Valentine, Q-100-FM Radio has signed on to be the media
sponsor and mid-day on-air personality Rachel Ryan will on
hand and will play a role in the program as emcee.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to
cancer patients and their families through the Cancer Foun
dation of Northeast Georgia. The mission of the foundation
is to alleviate the financial burden of cancer for eligible
patients.
“Our committee has been working very hard in planning
for this year’s event since January and we are very excited
about putting on another extraordinary event where the
community can come together, have a wonderful evening
out, and help raise money for a very worthy cause,” said Tri-
cia Massey, director of outreach for the Northridge Medical
Center. “We received such great feedback from last year’s
event; we just couldn’t wait to do it again.”
The fashion show will include a combination of profes
sional models from Atlanta, local business persons and
school teachers, and will feature local cancer survivors.
The show will be produced by Poshe Productions, a top
fashion and entertainment company based in Atlanta.
According to Valentine, several local businesses have
already signed on to co-sponsor the event. Sponsors
include: Q-100, CertaPro Painters, Denyse Signs, Master-
craft Stucco, Town of Braselton, EMC Security Advanced
Stanchions, Jackson EMC, Swirlee’s Frozen Yogurt and
Legacy Landscape Management. Additional sponsorship
information can be obtained by contacting either Tricia
Massey at Northridge Medical Center or Mark Valentine at
Tanger Outlets.

Free mulch
available Saturday
to commerce residents
The Commerce Public Works Department has an abun
dance of free mulch available for city residents.
The mulch is made from yard wastes — leaves, limbs,
cuttings — ground up at the former city dump at the end of
Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. It is offered free to residents who
come pick it up, and a Public Works employee will load the
tmck or trailer.
The city will also deliver larger amounts, for $50, inside
the city limits.
Residents can pick up mulch between 1:00 and 2 p.m.
every Wednesday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on alternate
Saturdays. Call 706-335-3164 to confirm Saturday dates and to
make appointments to pick up the mulch.
The next day mulch will be given away is Saturday July 23.

A Brockton Road man
who is trying to sell his
house was surprised when
he was contacted by sever
al people wanting to rent
the home.
Someone apparently got
photos of the home off of
his realtor’s website and
posted it on Craigslist as
being for rent for $650 per
month. The post directs
the renters to send the
money to Poland in U.S.
dollars.
Other scams reported
to the Jackson County
Sheriff’s Office last week
include the following:
•a woman said some
one with a “foreign accent”
called saying he was from
the IRS and demanding
payment for taxes for 2008
through 2014. The victim
said the man threatened to
have her arrested for not
paying the taxes.
• a woman said she list
ed a leaf blower for sell on
an online yard sale site.
She said someone contact
ed her and said they would
mail her a check for $300
for the leaf blower. She
said she received a check
for more than that amount.
She said the person then
sent a message stating they
overpaid and asking her to
cash the check and mail
them the difference.
• a woman said she
advertised four “teletub-
bies” on Craigslist to sell.
She said a man from Cali
fornia offered her $200. She
agreed and then received a
check for $1,980 from the
man. The man asked her
to cash the check, take out
$250 for herself and send
the remainder to a “mov
ing company” he hired to
pick up the “teletubbies.”
•a man said someone
called his father saying
they were from the “Unit
ed States government” and
told him he owed money
and to wire it in order to
avoid getting in trouble.
• a woman was attempt
ing to access her bank
online when a pop up kept
appearing on the screen
stating that it was from
Microsoft and her comput
er had a virus. She was
instructed to call the phone
number listed, which she
did. She was asked to pay
$100 by credit to get the
computer problem fixed.
She said her account was
charged $100, as well as an
additional $1,000 and $199.
•a Jefferson woman
said a woman she met
through Craigslist asked if
she could mail her items to
sell for her. She agreed but
later found out if this was
part of a scam.
