Local arrests
2 women face drug charges
Two women face drug
charges and one of them a
public indecency charge after
Commerce Police respond
ed last week to a report of a
woman banging on the door
of a closed medical office
and screaming at the people
inside.
The complainant also
reported that a woman urinat
ed in the parking lot and left in
a gray SUV.
The officer encountered
the vehicle at Warren’s Pack
age Store, turned around and
stopped it near the intersec
tion of Washington Street and
North Elm after running the tag
and learning that the vehicle
had no valid insurance.
The driver, Cheryl Cochran
Nylander, 53, 309 Trace Lane,
Commerce told the officer that
she had taken the passenger,
Judy Burkos, 58, 36 Gober
Road, Commerce, to a doc
tor’s office where Burkos said
she wanted to talk to the doc
tor about prescriptions he’d
given her brother. The officer
wrote that Nylander’s “mani
festation showed signs of pos
sible depressant use,” said he
noticed “a moderate odor of
an alcoholic beverage com
ing from the vehicle” and that
Burkos’ demeanor “changed
often and quick.”
Burkos, he wrote, admitted
consuming alcoholic beverag
es and Xanax.
The officer questioned
Burkos about urinating in the
parking lot, but she did not
respond. “When Ms. Nyland
er asked if she did that, Ms.
Burkos stated, ‘I may have,”’
the officer wrote. “Ms. Burkos
later admitted in the conversa
tion she had urinated beside
the office but did not think it
was a big deal.”
The officer confirmed that
the vehicle was not insured.
The department’s narcotics
dog gave a positive alert to
the front passenger door of
the vehicle, and the officer
found a prescription bottle for
Nylander, which contained
medication as indicated on
the label. However, the officer
found another prescription
bottle containing two Alpra
zolam pills, for which there
was no prescription. In addi
tion, an officer found an open
container of beer on the front
passenger side of the vehicle.
Police charged Burkos with
violation of the open container
law, drugs not in their origi
nal container, violation of the
Georgia Controlled Substanc
es Act and public indecency.
They charged Nylander with
drugs not in the original con
tainer, violation of the Geor
gia Controlled Substances Act
and driving without insurance.
Others Charged
Others arrested or cited

identity of a vehicle and viola
tion of the Georgia Controlled
Substances Act. An officer
pulled Roberts over on Hwy.
98 eastbound after observing
his vehicle running the red
light on Ila Road at the bypass.
When pulled over, Roberts
told the officer he ran the red
light to keep from stalling his
vehicle. Roberts also admit
ted that he did not have a
license, and when the officer
ran his information, dispatch
advised that Roberts’ license
was suspended. The tag
came back to another person
and was altered, and “2016”
was written in with a Sharp
ie. The vehicle VIN number
came back to a 1990 Dodge

inventorying the vehicle, offi

was his. Meanwhile, police

Whitcomb attracted police
attention with the seat belt
violation on U.S. 441. The tag
returned to another vehicle,

Whitcomb was not under the
influence at the time of the
