Avoid carpenter
ants at home
In Georgia during
the summer, home-
owners begin see
ing these large black
ants inside their
homes or outside
on the porch or
deck. The ants they
see are called car
penter ants. These
ants are normally
found in wooded
areas where there are a lot of decaying
stumps, rotting roots and/or old declining
trees. These sites are perfect for them to
build a nest.
Carpenter ants live in colonies made
up of a “queen,” males, workers, eggs,
and pupae. The colony can be found by
the discarded wood chips (frass) piled on
the ground near the entrance to the nest.
The colony supports a large home nest,
plus several satellite nests. To destroy the
ant colony you will need to find all the
nests and destroy them.
Actually carpenter ants are not nearly
as bad as you might think. Although
they are associated with dead and rotting
wood, they do not eat the wood and do
not cause the rot. Carpenter ants will
not kill trees, they just prefer the soft,
moist, rotten wood in which to build their
nurseries.
Inside the house, they move in to areas
around plumbing and roof leaks where
wood stays wet and rots. Out of doors,
they seek rotting stumps and roots, decay
ing trees, and firewood. Carpenter ants
eat dead and living insects, the honey
dew emitted by aphids, ripe fruit, fruit juic
es, sugar and sweets, and scraps of food.
Generally, when you see a single ant,
it is a scout foraging for food. When he
finds food, he will leave a pheromone
scent trail back to the nest.
Up to a point, carpenter ants have a
positive effect on the environment, in
that, as a scavenger, they reprocess or
clean up rotting wood. On the other
hand, when their tunnels put a strain on
the tree’s water conducting capacity and
when the tunnels weaken the tree’s struc
ture and the tree becomes a hazard tree,
the ants become unwanted pests.
As mentioned earlier, to get rid of the
ants, it is essential to destroy both the
home and satellite nests. You should
get rid of old stumps and cover and
store firewood away from the house, off
the ground. Repairing roof and plumbing
leaks also helps.
Proper food storage and sanitation can
also reduce ants. You should wash areas
that have been used by foraging ants in
order to get rid of the pheromone scent
trail.
Every year there are fewer and fewer
chemical products allowed to be used by
the non-licensed homeowner. Whatever
you choose, read the directions careful
ly. Boric acid is one material that is still
available; it will kill foraging ants but it will
not be carried back to the nest. Liquid
formulations are also available.
Aerosol sprays do not provide long last
ing ant control. If you see a large amount
of ants indoors and you suspect a heavy
infestation, call a professional extermina
tor. They are licensed to use stronger,
longer-lasting pesticides not available to
the general public. (Portions of this article

Regional Extension Agent).

New Employees
Patrons may have noticed two new faces
behind the desk at the Commerce Library.
Sandra Cope and Warwick Armstrong are
both new to the staff
Cope was born and raised in Middle
Georgia and has an undergraduate degree
from Georgia Southern, as well as a grad
uate degree from Antioch University in
Ohio. She and her husband lived in Mich
igan and Ohio where she worked as a
software engineer.
They retired in 2010, escaped the brutal
winters and moved to Commerce to be
close to children and grandchildren. Her
hobbies are sewing and reading, and she
volunteers at the Banks-Jackson Food Bank
and at her church, Mt. Calvary Missionary
Baptist.
Warwick Armstrong, or Waz as he is
known, is a business studies graduate
from Cardiff Metropolitan University in
Wales in the United Kingdom. He took
early retirement from city government
in Cardiff, met Diane on holiday in 2010,
married her and moved to the United
States. He admits to being a keen sports
