Berlin, Md.—The quaintest cemetery
In the United States is located on the
Mason-Dixon line, at Bethel church,
northwest of Whaleyville, near here.
Peaked shingle-built roofs instead of
imposing marble monuments mark the
graves. This unitpie cemetery is.
thought to be about two hundred years
old.
As if to protect those buried there
some one, decades ago, constructed
peaked shingle roofs over the graves.
These shelters are about three feet
high in the middle, the sides touching \
the ground.
Built of cypress wood and shingles
these roofs run the length of the
graves, forming their only location, as
no mounds are visible. Some of the
lumber has rotted by this time, but
the form and general shape of this
‘village of the dead" still remain.
