Ag Line: Keep Exposed Pipes and Hoses Protected
By Wade Parker
County Extension Agent
With all of this warm weather,
I cannot tell if it is winter or sum
mer. If the warm weather contin
ues, we will soon see the Bradford
pears and other ornamentals start
budding. However, do not forget
that it is only the first of January
and freezing temperatures will be
back. Don’t forget to keep out
door pipes and hoses protected.
Freezing temperatures can
cause the water in an exposed
pipe or hose to expand. If the
water expands too much, the pipe
or hose bursts.
In recent years, many people
have installed or expanded home
irrigation systems. With home ir
rigation systems, you probably
won't know you had any pipe
damage until you turn it on for
the first spring watering.
Most in-ground sprinkler pipes
will be fine, only the top 2 inches
of the ground will freeze in most
of Georgia. Pipes should be well
below this level. Other irrigation
components, such as back-flow
prevention valves, at ground level
though could be in danger.
The bottom line is, if there are
any exposed valves or pipes
around your home, tape them up
or use a sack. I am sure many of
you are familiar with “croker
sacks.” These are the burlap bags
people put potatoes or pecans in.
Home-improvement stores have
many tapes, foams, and gadgets
to keep these pipes warm on cold
winter nights.
The tips of sprinkler heads can
hold water. When frozen, they
can rupture. The whole sprinkler
system holds water too, even
when it isn't being used. Don't
forget to drain the system. If you
don’t drain it properly in the win
ter, your sprinkler could be a gey
ser when you turn it on next
spring.
Outside Water Hoses
Leave the hoses hanging out
side, but disconnect from faucets.
Disconnect, drain, and store
hoses someplace with a constant
temperature. This will prolong
the life of hoses.
If you leave hoses undrained
outside in the winter, don't move
them or touch them in freezing
weather.
Private water users and rural
residents with wells should check
out their main water pump. Usu
ally a quarter-inch pipe connects
to the pressure switch. If it's
metal, it likely won’t freeze. But
if it is plastic, it might freeze and
burst. This could cause the water
pump to fail or continue to run
and cause some major winter re
pairs.
These are a few suggestions to
help you with winterizing your
irrigation and pipes. Please do not
hesitate to call with any questions.

operative Extension offers educa

SCV camp participates
in joint meeting
The annual banquet honoring
Confederate Generals Robert E.
Lee and Thomas J. ‘‘Stonewall”
Jackson was held at RJ’s Restau
rant in Statesboro Saturday, Jan.
3. For the first time, four area
Sons of Confederate Veterans
camps combined to put on a re
ally big birthday bash:
Buckhead-Fort Lawton of
Millen, Black Creek Volunteers
of Sylvania, Ogeechee Rifles of
Statesboro and the Ebenezer
Rifles of Rincon. One hundred
and nine people attended from
these camps and other camps in
the Confederation. The
Statesboro camp, commanded
by Deke Cox, was the host
Camp.
Michael Givens of Beaufort,
S.C. was the guest speaker. He
currently serves as Lieutenant
Commander-in-Chief of the
SCV International organization.
His duties and responsibilities
include recruiting and retention,
among others. He spoke to the
assembled on the virtues and
military prowess of General Lee,
who is widely considered to
have been the very best military
officer ever produced by this
country. He was cordially and
enthusiastically received by all.
The camps presented their lo
cal awards and accolades before
and immediately following the
speech. Certificates of Apprecia
tion were presented by Camp
2102 to the following folks who
have made this past year such a
success: Donna Drake, Donna
Mull, Paul Herrington, Jr., Den
nis Jenkins, ‘‘corporate partner”
at Oliver's General Store George
Saxon Sr., who also received
certificates for his sons, George,
Jr., and Justin. These three
gentlemen have been instrumen
tal in fund-raising for the camp,
barbequing at festivals under the
‘‘shingle” of OT Reb's Flame-
Throwed Roasted Beast! They
regularly sell out.
The camp officers chose com
patriot Roger Saxon as “Volun
teer of the Year” for his efforts
in 2008. He has attended memo
rials, assisted at the Buckhead
Education Day, cleanups at the
church and has generally made
himself available for anything
needed. His only prerequisite
was that whatever done honors
the memory of Confederate an
cestors.
The “Compatriot of the Year”
award was elected by the camp
membership at the December
meeting. This year, that man was
James Ellis Saxon, who has not
only availed himself to the
Camp and its mission, like his
brother Roger, but he also serves
as Adjutant in the officer corps.
His particular job in the local
camp entails not only maintain
ing membership records and
new enlistments, and the myriad
of paperwork that is required by
the Brigade, Georgia Division,
and national organization, but
also the Camp treasury. Mem
bers expressed congratulations
to both men.
The highlight of the evening
was a presentation of a shell
jacket and kepi to Camp 2102’s
Color Sergeant Paul Herrington
by Fifth Brigade commander
Mike Mull of Statesboro.
Camp 2102’s newest member, David Wiggins, receives
his membership certificate from Adjutant James Saxon
at the December meeting. (Photos contributed)

1861-1865” to SCV Lieutenant Commander-in-Chief
Michael Givens at the joint Lee-Jackson Banquet held
Jan. 3 in Statesboro.
