major issues expected to be ad
dressed during the remainder of
the session include the follow
ing:
Transportation funding. Last
year, legislation proposing a re
gional, local option sales tax for
transportation improvements
was narrowly defeated in the
Senate. That plan will likely be
reconsidered this year to address
a need for $100 billion or more
in coming years to build the
roads and transit facilities that
can effectively serve the state’s
growing population.
Sunday sales. After previous
failed attempts, the issue of al
lowing cities and counties to au
thorize the packaged sale of al
coholic beverages on Sunday
will be discussed again.
Death penalty. The failure of
a jury to reach a unanimous
death penalty verdict in the case
of Brian Nichols, who murdered
four people in a shooting ram
page that began at the Fulton
County Courthouse in 2005, has
renewed a proposal to allow the
death sentence to be imposed on
a vote by 10 out of 12 jurors, in
stead of the currently mandated
unanimous decision. Similar leg
islation passed the House but lost
in the Senate in 2008.
Gun laws. Legislation has
been pre-filed that would elimi
nate the provision in Georgia law
that currently requires a person
with a handgun to keep the
weapon in a holster when carry
ing it in public.
Seat belts. Lawmakers will
again debate whether to end the
exemption in Georgia’s seat belt
law for drivers and passengers
in pickup trucks. Proponents of
the legislation say closing the
loophole will save lives and
make Georgia eligible for mil
lions of dollars each year in fed
eral highway funding.
I am honored to be represent
ing you for my third tern in the
Senate. Throughout the session,
I will keep you posted on the
progress of legislation involving
these and other issues. Please

whenever I can be of service.

Your Body Is a Temple
Many of us treat our bodies more like a garbage can than a temple. We eat and
drink all manner of unhealthy substances, we fail to get the proper rest and exer
cise that we need, and we generally neglect our health until we don’t have it. We
know a lot more about how to keep our bodies healthy than they did in Biblical
times, and yet, ironically, more people are obese than ever before, simply because
we eat too much and exercise too little. Sadly, much of modern-day illness and
death are due to preventable causes, such as using tobacco or misusing alcohol,
poor diet and inactivity, or simply not wearing seat belts. God did not give our bod
ies to be squandered or defiled, and if we engage in bad habits which wear out or
destroy our body before its time, we are neglecting this wonderful gift from God. So,
we should take care of our body: eat right, exercise daily, and get plenty of rest. We
will probably find that the spirit that dwells within us will be a lot happier once we
start taking better care of our temple. And, we should remember that it’s not just
what goes into our body that defiles it, but also, the behaviors which come out of
it.Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which
you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify
God in your body. R.S.V. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
