Local SCV honors Gen. Lee in Milledgeville
Gen. Robert Edward Lee was signed and where, in November
honored on the occasion of his 1864, during the infamous
202 nd birthday by the United
Daughters of the Confederacy
(UDC) and the Sons of Confed
erate Veterans (SCV) organiza
tions on a cloudy, rain-swept
day at Georgia’s Civil War capi
tal of Milledgeville. The event
took place on Saturday, Jan. 24,
with over 200 participants,
some in civilian garb and most
in period uniform in attendance.
This was the first time that this
celebration did not take place
in Atlanta.
A gentle breeze ruffled the
folds of Old Glory and the
battle flags of the Confederacy
and the flags of Georgia that
was massed for the march from
the Old Governor’s Mansion to
the Old State House on Wayne
Street, a distance of one-half
mile.
Shortly after 11 a.m., the en
tourage assembled in the legis
lative chambers in the Old State
House, where in January 1861
the Ordinance of Secession was
March to the Sea, Union troops
staged a mock session of the
legislature and "repealed” that
same ordinance.
Greetings from the UDC and
SCV were given, and the issu
ance of proclamations by the
City of Milledgeville and Gov.
Sonny Perdue of Georgia in
honor of General Lee was pre
sented. In addition, the
Governor’s annual proclama
tion marking April as Confed
erate Heritage and History
Month was read.
The keynote address was
given by state representative
Bill Hembree (R-Winston).
Locally, Camp 2102 had five
members present. Donna Drake
represented the Waynesboro
UDC and the Order of Robert
E. Lee chapter 941 from
Statesboro. Cadet member
Conley Drake was chosen to
lead with the color guard on the
march and stand with them in
the legislative chambers.

Pickle Spears, Boiled Egg, Cheese, Cold Cut Sandwich, Grapes.
Thursday - Baked Chicken or P/B Jelly Sandwich, Broccoli & Cheese,
Butter Beans, Pineapple Cup, Roll or Salad Bar: Lettuce, Tomato,
Celery Sticks, Cheese, Tuna or Chicken Salad, Grapes, Graham
Crackers, Saltines.
Friday - Hot Dog on Bun or P/B Jelly Sandwich, French Fries, Cole
Slaw, Mandarin Oranges, Graham Crackers or Salad Bar: Lettuce,
Tomato, Pickle Spears, Boiled Egg, Cheese, Turkey/Cheese Sub,
Grapes.
Master Lewis Conley Drake was invited to join the honor
guard in leading the march from the Old Governor’s
Mansion to the Old State House. This is in the old
legislative chambers.

MGGDC returns to Owen’s
The Millen Gentlemen’s
Gourmet Dining Club
(MGGDC) returned to Warner
Robins to once again dine at the
newly renovated Owen’s Res
taurant. They were not disap
pointed. The food was served
family style, brought to the
tables in large bowls and plat
ters, featuring barbeque ribs,
fried chicken, eight fresh veg
etables, homemade biscuits and
cornbread.
The choice of beverages was
sweet tea or water. Dessert,
which is included, was a deli
cious banana pudding. The cost
of this delectable, country meal
was $7.99, all-inclusive. This
continues to be the best food for
the money the MGGDC has ex
perienced.
Timing is important as
Owen’s is open for lunch only,
Tuesday through Lriday, from
11a.m. until 1 p.m., which is
