Ag Line: Cost to Grow Crops
Most in History
By Wade Parker
County Extension Coordinator
Row-crop harvest has all but
winded down in Georgia. While
there still may be a field of cot
ton here and there, I think it is
safe to say we are 99% finished.
Farmers still may be uncertain on
how they finished this year. How
ever, one thing is certain, this
crop was the costliest in history
to produce.
“Georgia farmers, like many,
have enjoyed good yields and
prices for a few years now. But
they’ve had to deal with rising
costs, too,” said Don Shurley, an
economist with University of
Georgia Cooperative Extension.
Input costs including fuel and
certain fertilizer prices have
dropped, but crop prices have
dropped as well.
Last year (2007), Georgia
farmers spent $478 on average to
grow an acre of cotton on irri
gated land. This year they spent
an estimated $573 per acre, the
most ever. An acre of irrigated
peanuts cost a farmer $529 in
2007. It cost $685 this year, a 30
percent increase. An acre of ini-
gated soybeans cost $225 in
2007. It cost $314 this year, a 40
percent increase.
Let’s discuss returns. The av
erage return on an acre of pea
nuts last year, after subtracting
the variable costs, was $233. It
will be $178 this year. The aver
age return on an acre of soybeans
last year was $105 after costs. It
will be $50 this year.
These are all average numbers.
Some farmers did better, some
did worse. This just shows us that
it takes high yields to keep up
with the costs!
I feel that crop prices will not
be as high as they were last year;
but with lower fuel and fertilizer,
I think we will fare pretty well.
Just keep watching the board and
grab the price that is needed for
you to make a profit!
Crop Budgets
I have the new on-line spread
sheet budgets ready for use.
Please feel free to come by the
office and work through some. If
you can’t make it work on paper,
it is almost impossible to make it
work in the field.

operative Extension offers edu
