Relief coming for people who
receive Social Security, benefits
Single

Denture
By Paul D. Barnes
Social Security Regional
Commissioner in Atlanta
The American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009, which
the president signed into law in
February, provides for a one-time
payment of $250 to people receiv
ing Social Security and Supple
mental Security Income (SSI) ben
efits.
The one-time recovery pay
ments will go out in May 2009,
and all payments should be re
ceived by the end of May. InApril,
Social Security will send a letter
with additional information to
each person who is eligible for the
one-time payment. The payments
will be sent automatically, mean
ing no action is required on the part
of the person receiving
benefits. The economic recovery
payments will be made separately
from a person’s regular monthly
payments.
All adults who receive Social
Security benefits, including dis
abled adult children, (but not mi
nor children,) are eligible for $250
payment. In addition, all persons
who receive SSI payments, includ
ing minor children, are eligible for
the payment. Anyone who re
ceives benefits or who was eligible
to receive benefits during any of
the three months prior to enact
ment, (November and December
of 2008 and January 2009,) will
receive the one-time payment as
long as the address of record is in
one of the 50 states, the District of
Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam,
U.S. Virgin Islands, American Sa
moa or the Northern Mariana Is
lands.
The payments will be made in
the same way that regular monthly
payments are made. People with
direct deposit will receive then-
payments electronically. Those
who receive paper checks will re
ceive their payments in the mail.
People who receive regular pay
ments through the Direct Express
debit card will receive their one
time payments through the card.
If someone receives both Social
Security and SSI, only one pay
ment of $250 will be made. The
economic recovery legislation also
provides for a one-time payment
to recipients of Department of Vet
erans Affairs (VA) and Railroad
Retirement Board (RRB)
benefits. However, if you receive
Social Security or SSI benefits and
you also receive VA and/or RRB
benefits, you will only receive one
$250 payment. The Social Secu
rity Administration will send you
this payment.
To assist in processing the pay
ments as efficiently as possible,
please do not contact Social Secu
rity unless you do not receive a
payment by Thursday, June 4. In
formation is available at
www.socialsecurity.gov and will
be updated regularly.

County commission requests city’s help
By Deborah Bennett
Millen News Editor
Millen City Council heard an
appeal from the Jenkins County
Commissioners for consolidation
of beautification efforts during
the Tuesday, March 3, meeting
of the group.
Commissioner Pam Dwight
suggested that the county and city
coordinate their efforts to im
prove the appearance of the com
munity, including roadways en
tering the city and signage to at
tract visitors to the downtown
area.
“We should work together and
pool our resources to get it done,”
Commissioner Dwight said.
She also presented council
members with a copy of the
county’s recently adopted county
logo and suggested that a joint
meeting of city and county offi
cials might be helpful.
Council members were recep
tive to the ideas.
Other actions taken by coun
cil included the following:

School system celebrates School Board Appreciation Week
The Jenkins County school sys
tem is joining a statewide celebra
tion this week to salute the efforts
of local school board members.
The week of March 9-13 has been
proclaimed School Board Appre
ciation Week in Georgia. The
weeklong observance calls atten
tion to the contributions of the lo
cal board of education.
Superintendent Melissa Will
iams stated that citizens elect board
members to represent the
community’s voice on education
matters and to set the vision for
the school district. Our board
spends countless hours fulfilling
its responsibilities and working
together to continually improve
our education system. As the men
and women citizens elect board
members to represent them in edu
cation matters, local school boards
represent a continuing commit
ment to local citizen control and
decision-making in education.
Board members serving are as
follows: Carroll Gay, chairman;
Roderick Campbell, vice-chair
man; Freddie Brinson; Roy Cook;
and Irene Drummer.
As constitutional officers of
Georgia, school board members
are responsible for setting educa
tional policies, employing school
personnel, providing buildings and
equipment, operating a transpor
tation system and disbursing
school funds. As community lead
ers, school board members serve
as advocates for the children in
local public schools and must
Syl-View Happenings
By Betty Scarborough
There was a sweet spirit of love
as the residents enjoyed the “Fun
Night.” Mitch Durden, the great-
nephew of Doris Lawson, danced
and entertained the large group of
residents and volunteers.
Lee Baker played lively music
on the keyboard as we celebrated
Mardi Gras. The young people
gave eveiyone colorful beads and
masks to wear. It was a veiy fes
tive time. Jordan Zeigler led the
young people as they danced.
Members of the Farmdale Baptist
Church and other volunteers pro
vided refreshments. The young
volunteers also helped to serve. We
were thrilled that Hilda Smith, one
of our faithful dancers, was able
to return following her illness. We
invite you to attend "Fun Night”
on fourth Monday nights at 7 p.m.
We are excited as we plan for
the Ms. Syl-View Pageant. We will
celebrate the achievements of our
ladies on Thursday, March 19, at
7 p.m. This is always a special
night, and we invite you to join us.
There will be a reception follow
ing the pageant. It’s a magic time
for our ladies, as they are all
dressed up and have their pictures
