Rural Development contributes to Entrepreneur Park
A ceremonial check for
$99,000 was presented Wednes
day, March 4, to Mabel C.
Jenkins, chairman of the Jenkins
County Development Authority,
by Donnie D. Thomas, acting
state director, USDA Rural De
velopment, to construct an en
trance to the Entrepreneur Park.
“Projects that help entrepre
neurs are good investments for
the community,” Thomas said.
“Small businesses create the
most jobs and that can happen
quickly.”
The park is a 97 acre site pur

OneGeorgia funds and is lo

location is considered ideal for
small businesses because it is
surrounded by residences. The
road in front of the park has

rest of the project will be phased
in and includes an office build
ing with supporting equipment
and software and other business
accessories that would be
needed in a business incubator.
Jenkins County has been des
ignated an “Entrepreneur
Friendly” county by the state
and will contributed $40,000 in
in-kind services and cash to the
project.
Funds are provided through

Election
to be held
March 17
to vote for
ESPLOST
By Deborah Bennett
Millen News Editor
A Special Election will be held Tuesday, March 17, to determine
if the present Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax
(ESPLOST) should be renewed for an additional 5-year period. The
county’s current 7-cents sales tax will remain the same if the refer
endum receives voter approval.
The present ESPLOST was originally passed in 2005, for a 5-
year period, along with approval of the issuance of general obliga
tion bonds by the Jenkins County Board of Education. The sale of
bonds allowed the school system to obtain immediate funding for
planned capital improvement projects rather than having to wait for
ESPLOST funds to accumulate. It was noted then that a second
referendum would be needed in order to generate sufficient rev
enue to pay off the bonds as they matured over a 10-year period.
The maximum amount of revenue that could be collected by re
newal of the ESPLOST has been set at $5,258,175.
Advance and absentee voting in the election has been underway
for several weeks with officials reporting that voter turnout has been
slow thus far.
Anyone who was registered to vote as of Feb. 17 may cast a
ballot in this election.
Voters do not have to give a reason for voting absentee when
voting in person or by mail.
A photo I.D. is required when voting in person. Forms of accept
able I.D. are: a Georgia driver’s license, even if expired; any valid
state or federal government issued photo ID, including a free Voter
ID; card issued by county registrar or Georgia Department of Driver
Services; valid U.S. passport; valid employee photo ID from any
branch, department, agency or entity of the U.S. Government, Geor
gia, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other entity of
this state; valid U.S. military photo ID or valid tribal photo ID.
Applications for absentee ballots by mail may be made in the
office of the Jenkins County Registrar at the Jenkins County Court
house until Friday, March 13.
A photo I.D. is not required when voting by mail. However, first
time registrants who are making an application for a ballot by mail
must provide one of the following as a form of identification: cur
rent utility bill, current bank statement, government check or pay-
check, valid government document with name and address,
Georgia’s driver’s license, valid I.D. card by any state or U.S. with
photo, valid U.S. passport, valid government employer photo I.D.,
