Savannah River Parkway
construction on schedule

While construction appears
to have slowed down on the
two incompleted sections of
the Savannah River Parkway
(SRP) through Jenkins
County, the work is actually
on schedule, according to
Angie Cooper, Georgia De
partment of Transportation

The segment of the project
that begins at the intersection
of CR 190 (Paynes Chapel
Road) and U.S. Highway 25
and continues north to the in
tersection of SR 121 (Wood
pecker Trail) and U.S. High
way 25, was delayed due to
default by the contractor. The
project has since been com
pleted, except for some pav
ing work, which should be
completed by June of this year.

Millen man shot
at local club
Tyrone Jeff, 21, of First Avenue, has been charged with ag
gravated assault in connection with the April 4 shooting of
another Millen man at “Williams Road Club” in south Jenkins
County.
During the early morning hours of April
4, the Jenkins County Sheriff’s Department
responded to a reported shooting at the club.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that
Michael Fryson, 21, of Martin Luther King
Jr. Drive, had been shot and was at the
Jenkins County Hospital receiving treat
ment. The alleged shooter had fled the
scene.
Further investigation revealed the iden
tity of the shooter and a lookout was posted
for Jeff and the vehicle he was last seen driv
ing when he left the club.
A short time later, Jeff surrendered himself to the sheriff’s
department. He is being held in the Jenkins County Jail, pend
ing Jenkins County Superior Court action.

Emergency Food,
Shelter funds
Congressman John Barrow announced this week that Jenkins
County has been awarded approximately $4,951 by the Emer
gency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).
Approximately $266,319 has been awarded to the 12 th Dis
trict of Georgia from federal funds totaling $100 million that
are being made available to the EFSP through the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Funds will be distributed to support social service agencies
to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utility assis
tance programs for people with non-disaster related emergen
cies.
In each funded jurisdiction, a local board advertises the avail
ability of the funds, establishes local priorities, selects local
non-profit and government agencies to receive supplement
funding and monitors program compliance.

City-wide yard sale
to be held May 2
Millen Better Hometown will sponsor a city-wide yard sale Sat
urday, May 2. The sponsor will advertise and promote the sale,
prepare maps to distribute of yard sale locations and mark locations
with balloons on the day of the sale. In addition to Jenkins County,
advertising will include surrounding counties.
Participants will be asked to pay a $5 registration fee for these
services. Everyone will need to register with Millen Better Home
town for a space and for inclusion on the map.
Everyone is invited to participate. Residents who do not live in
the city of Millen may use a space in the Market Day Park, the area
on Cotton Avenue adjacent to Regions Bank.
Everyone who is planning a yard sale this spring is being encour
aged to wait until May 2 and be part of this city-wide event.

The Satellite Man opens in Millen
The Millen-Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce recently sponsored a ribbon cutting cer
emony for The Satellite Man, located in the Edenfield Feed and Seed building, 709 U.S. High
way 25 North. Participating were, from left, first row: Emily Waters, Hunter Lastinger and
