JCHS senior named recipient
of Walter Harrison Scholarship
Graduating high school senior
Lindsey Caitlin Hall has been
awarded the 2009 Walter
Harrison
Scholarship
by Planters
Electric
Membership
Corporation
(EMC).
The $1,000
scholarship is
designed to
recognize stu
dents who
demonstrate
academic
merit and tal
ent and a
commitment
to community
service.
“The
Walter
Harrison
Scholarship helps our most de
serving students financially and
offers them encouragement to
pursue their academic goals and
dreams,” says Planters EMC
General Manager Matt Brinson.
Planters EMC sponsors and
awards the prestigious scholar
ship annually to deserving high
school students and college un
dergraduates who are involved
in their community and possess
exceptional academic ability and
potential demonstrated by their
high school performance, grade
point average, SAT score and
scholastic honors. The candi
dates’ need for financial aid is
also a consideration.
The $1,000 awaixl can be ap
plied to any accredited two or
four-year university, college or
vocational-technical school in
Georgia.
Hall has been accepted to
Georgia Southern University and
plans on pursuing a career in the
medical field.
“There is something about the
body and all of its systems work
ing together that amazes me,”
commented Hall. "This is why I
have chosen to do something in
the health field.” Hall is the
daughter of Terri Bolton and
David Hall of Millen.
Hall has an impressive aca
demic record which includes
leadership positions in the
Jenkins County FFA chapter and
membership in the Beta Club
and Interact Club. She also has
earned Georgia Certificate of
Merit Scholar and Rotarian
Scholar and was named to the
Honor Roll and Principal’s List.
In addition to her academic
pursuits, Hall has helped with
FFA community service projects
that benefited the local Bethany
Home and needy families, and
organized a local blood drive and
canned food drive for Jenkins
County High School.
The Walter Harrison Scholar
ship was created in 1985 by the
board of directors of Georgia
EMC, a trade association repre
senting the 42 electric coopera
tives, Georgia Transmission
Corp. and Oglethorpe Power
Corp.
The scholarship is named in
honor of Millen native Walter
Harrison, a pioneer in the rural
electricity movement and a
leader at the local, state and na
tional levels in electric coopera
tive programs.
The scholarship is funded by
Georgia’s electric cooperatives,
including Planters EMC, the
National Rural Electric Coopera
tive Association and the Georgia
Rural Electric Supply Corp.
Since 1985, more than $125,000
has been awarded to students
through the Walter Harrison
Scholarship Program.
Planters EMC is an electric
distribution cooperative provid
ing electricity and related ser
vices to 12,000 members-own-
