Please don’t miss the deadline for graduation “Patty Cake” ads.
They are due by noon this Thursday. The ads are a popular way
of honoring your favorite graduate and cost only $30, which in
cludes a photograph. The ads will appear' in the May 27 edition

The local VFW Post #2776 is seeking the names and addresses
of local military personnel deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan who
are not currently receiving The Millen News. The post would like
to pay for an annual subscription for them.
The VFW is also initiating a program that would place a U.S.A.
flag at each deceased veteran’s gravesite.
Information for both programs should be submitted to Byron
Scogins, VFW Post 2776 Commander, P. O. Box 687, Millen,

Letter to the Editor—
Dear Editor:
In my senior year of high
school in 1959, our coach had to
leave Millen because of personal
reasons, so we didn’t have a high
school baseball team.
The spring of 1959, Quaker
Oats began a floor mat of ama
teur leagues joining in an organi
zation with league champions
playing in a tourney and the win
ners going to a national tourney.
Our region would be played in
Savannah in Grayson Stadium.
A group of Millen men already
had a team, so they joined this
floor mat in the Ogeechee
League If I remember, the mem-
bers were George Gunn, William
Gunn, Jimmy Knight, T.W.
Frawley, Walter Bragg and
Charles Bragg. And I know I
missed some. They let me,
Connie Lewis, John Taylor and
Frank Stephens join the team. We
later picked up Buzzy McMillan
as shortstop. In the tourney, we
picked up Fuller Hunicut as a
catcher; Woody Collins, Franklin
Coleman and Roy Johnson as
pitchers.
Although these guys are local
small town men, they could slap
play baseball. Our strongest com
petition was Robbins of
Statesboro and their team was
made up of Georgia Southern
University (GSU) players.
I think we played nine games
that year and only lost to Robbins.
When we lost in Statesboro, they
pitched Clyde Miller so when
they played us in Millen, they
brought the best except they only
had eight players. They pitched
former pro pitcher and All-Amen -
can basketball player Whitty
Verstright. Well, we won, and I
did get a triple off him. Now, we
had to play a play-off game.
This game was played at the
GSU park with GSU’s top ace
pitching for them, Clyde Miller,
and now Hall of Famers in three
different halls. GSU’s coach, J.I.
Clements, was watching. Well,
ws scored, seven runs in the first
inning and won 7-6 with George
Gunn making a great over the
shoulder catch in short right field
for the final out. This made us
Ogeechee League champions of
1959.
We went on to Savannah and
beat some teams, even beat a
former St. Louis Cardinal Phil
Clark. We finally lost in the finals
to Barrett Oil, a nationally ranked
team. So, we did good, even
pulled a triple play against Barrett
Oil. For just some good ole coun
try boys, being this successful led
this team to becoming the best in
this part of the state and even led
to play for a national title.
Sincerely,
Butch Joiner
