JCHS JROTC hosts awards ceremony
The Army Corps of Cadets at
Jenkins County High School
(JCHS) hosted their second annual
Awards and Recognition Banquet
Friday, April 24, in the school caf
eteria. Military and civilian civic
organizations from Millen,
Sylvania and Augusta were
present to recognize cadets who
met their organization’s criteria for
excellence that focused on aca
demic/scholastic achievement,
citizenship, discipline, leadership
and patriotism.
Dr. Joey Kirkland, JCHS prin
cipal, also presented awards to
cadets for excellence in math, his
tory, science and English/foreign
language. Those cadets receiving
recognition in these areas all main
tained a 90 average or higher for
the year.
Twenty-two cadets were recog
nized for participating in varsity
athletics; 42 cadets were recog
nized for JROTC athletics; 21 ca
dets were recognized for academic
excellence with 13 making the
high school honor roll; 15 cadets
earned their letter jacket by par
ticipation in the JROTC Raider
Team and/or the JROTC Drill
Team/Color Guard for the past two
years.
The Veterans of Foreign War
recognized Cadet First Lieutenant
Chris Hillis for Military Excel
lence and Cadet Staff Sergeant
Ladeshia Simpkins for Scholastic
Excellence.

The bride-elect is the grand
daughter of Jesse and Mary Clubb
of Waycross and Grace Reid and
the late Henry L. Reid of
Chiefland, Fla. She is a 2002
graduate of Appling County Com
prehensive High School and a
2004 graduate of Ogeechee Tech
nical College. Shannon is currendy
employed by Lord Eye Center in
Statesboro and is a licensed dis
pensing optician.
The groom-elect is the grand
son of Beatrice Samples and the
late Newman Asa Samples Sr. of
Dawsonville and Gene and Betty
Browning of Lawrenceville. He is
a 2003 graduate of Jenkins County
High School and a 2007 graduate
of Georgia Southern University
with a Bachelor’s degree in Crimi
nal Justice. Andrew is currently
employed by the Statesboro Po
lice Department.
The wedding is planned for 3
p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Bible
Baptist Church of Statesboro.
