The North Jenkins County
Volunteer Fire Department
(NJCVFD) firefighters recently
accepted delivery of new pro
tective clothing that was made
available through a FEMA/
Homeland Security Grant.
Firefighters from Station #3
(Oak Hill); Station #7
(Birdsville); and Station #9
(Perkins) now have state-of- the
art gear. The $87,000 grant al
lowed the department to catch
up with the Millen and South
Jenkins volunteers in their em
phasis on personnel safety.
These grants have allowed
the fire service in Jenkins
County to remain compliant at
a time when funds were scarce.
“With the anticipated
completion of the Hiltonia
Road Station, the North Jenkins
portion of the five-year Rural
Fire Defense Master Plan will
be complete. The emphasis will
then turn toward strengthening
the fabric of the department by
advanced training and ISO In

tions,” said board president
Mike Lane.

Jenkins County High
School (JCHS) was well rep
resented at the girls Region
and State track meet. As a
team, the girls finished in 4 th

“This was a great accom
plishment,” commented
coach Chuck Sanders.
As for the individual
events, JCHS had some out
standing performances from
the girls. Ay ana Walker won
the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes
in the Region meet. She fin
ished 2 nd in 200 meter and 4 th
in the 100 meter events at
State. Deondra Lewis was
also a Region Champion in
the Shot Put and Discus
events. Deondra finished in
8 th place at State in the Dis
cus event. Zandra Lake also
was a Region Champ in the
300 Hurdles. Zandra finished
in 8 th place in her event at
State.
Coach Sanders would also
like to congratulate each girl,
noting that just about the en
tire squad will be returning,
along with some promising
young 8 th graders, and will,
hopefully, be coming out next
year to make the squad a lot
better.
