Wayside Home Chapter UDC to
hold monument rededication
The Georgia Division
United Daughters of the Con
federacy (UDC) will rededi
cate the Wayside Home Chap
ter UDC Monument 10 a.m.
Saturday, June 13. This cen
tennial observance of the un
veiling of the monument will
be held on the Jenkins County
Courthouse square.
Jenkins County native,
Lacy “Butch” Frye III will
give the keynote address. Mr.
Frye’s mother and grand
mother were members of the
Wayside Home Chapter. He
will share personal knowl
edge of his family’s involve
ment in UDC.
The Wayside Home Chap
ter, Millen, was chartered Oc
tober 8, 1906. Chapter offic
ers were: Mrs. C.V. DeLoach,
president; Mrs. C.E. Holmes,
corresponding secretary; Mrs.
E.T. Bell, historian. The
Chapter’s Confederate Monu
ment was unveiled June 3,
1909. During the 77 years the
Chapter made reports, there
were 175 members recorded
on their roster. The Chapter
disbanded in 1983.
Margaret Jones Chapter
UDC President Dot Cauley
will rededicate a memorial
placed on the Court House
Square in 1925. The inscrip
tion on the bronze states:
“This Boulder is placed by
The Wayside Home Chapter
United Daughters of the Con
federacy of Jenkins County,
Georgia and The Margaret
Jones Chapter United Daugh
ters of the Confederacy of
Burke County, Georgia to per
petuate the name of The Way-
side Home and as a Memorial
to the Noble Women who
served there with valor and
patriotism. The Wayside
Home was established, main
tained and operated by
women of Burke County,
Georgia (now Burke and
Jenkins Counties) for the
comfort and relief of our Con
federate Soldiers. Those who
served as Presidents of the
Home were Mrs. Ann
MacKenzie, Mrs. Elizabeth
Jones, Mrs. Ransom Lewis,
and Mrs. Amos Whitehead.”

Edmond North State 6A Golf Champs
The Edmond North Huskies
captured their fifth straight
state title for Class 6 A Okla
homa high school golf on
May 12. The tournament was
held at Emerald Falls Golf
Club in Broken Arrow, Okla
homa, and it was shortened to
a 36-hole tournament when a
series of thunderstorms blan
keted the state on the second
day of play.
The Huskies won by 16
shots over Jenks High School.
Edmond North has quite a tra
dition in high school golf hav
ing captured seven straight re
gional championships and nu
merous regional and national
titles.

Joyner of Millen and Gregory will join the back to Georgia in June after
Grovetown. He is the nephew Kennesaw State Owls Golf residing there for five years.
Students compete in Math-a-thon
Jenkins County Elementary School fourth and fifth grade students recently participated in St. Jude’s Math-a-

GSU announces dean’s list,
president’s list
Local students named to the president’s list at Georgia South
ern University for the Spring 2009 term are Burnestine Tho
mas, Chester Joyner, Katelyn Head, Nathan R. Saxon, Rebekah
N. Daniel, Stephanie N. Swinson and Valencia T. Williams.
To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must have at
least a 4.0 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12
hours for the semester.
Students named to the dean’s list for the Spring 2009 term
are Jamese L. Oliver, Charles B. Gay, Wesley M. Kent, Austin
P. Kent, Nathaniel L. Golden Jr., William A. Coggins, Laquanta
S. Jackson, Jason E. Boynton and Vanessa D. Gordon.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have at least

for the semester.

LAWN CARE BID REQUEST
The Jenkins County Board of Commissioners is requesting a sealed blan
ket bid on Lawn and Shrubbery Care for the following county buildings:
1. Courthouse
2. Extension Service/Ag Building/Indigenous Garden
3. Senior Citizen Center
4. EMS Headquarters
5. Adult Learning Center
6. Tax Appraiser Office
7. Farm Credit Building (ASCS/SCS)
The cost for each building should be listed individually, but based on
annual service from July 1,2009 to June 30,2010.
If you are interested in bidding, you may pick up a packet of specifica
tions on these buildings at the Jenkins County Board of Commissioners'
Office on the 3rd floor of the courthouse.
Bids will be opened during the bi-monthly meeting which will be held
June 16,2009 at 7 P.M. Your Lown Care bid may be delivered to the
Commissioners' Office or mailed to:

Should you be awarded this bid your company must be covered under a
workers compensation insurance policy and a copy be furnished to the
county before intiating the contract.
