Opinions, yours and ours
The Chatter Box
By Deborah Bennett
I read something last week noting 25 things that were about to
become extinct in America and thought it interesting enough to pass
along to you.
At the top of the list was the farm family. According to the USDA,
5.3 million farms dotted the nation in 1950. but this number had
declined to 2.1 million by the 2003 farm census. I hate to think what
it must be now.
Second, was analog television. Today the majority of people get
their television programming through cable or satellite providers.
Surprisingly, news magazines and television news were third.
While the magazines and news cast have not gone anywhere, they
have far less readers and viewers than in the past.
Others on the list were: U.S. Post Office, yellow pages, classified
ads, movie rental stores, dial-up Internet, land phone lines, drive-in
theaters, VCRs, Ham radio, Ash trees, Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs,
swimming holes, stand-alone bowling alleys, answering machines,
cameras that use film, honey bees, incandescent bulbs, the milk
man, handwritten letters, personal checks, wild horses and mumps
and measles.
I was glad to see that “newspapers” was not listed!
The poll question on our website last week was, “The annual Fair-
on-the-Square will be held at the Jenkins County Elementary School
this year due to construction taking place at the Jenkins County Court
house. How do you think the change of location will affect atten
dance?”
Responses, as of Monday morning, were as follows: More will
attend - 3; Less will attend - 52; and No difference - 10.
To participate in this week’s poll, go to http://

Happy birthday this week to: James Thompson, Irene Drummer,
William P. Bragg. Tyler Taylor, Elena Hernandez, Mary McMillan,
Lula Mock and David Thompson.
Celebrating wedding anniversaries this week are: Mr. and Mrs.
Craig Rowland.

Letter to the Editor—
Dear Editor:
I am sorry that incorrect in
formation has circulated about
the Millen/Jenkins County Rec
reation Department and the lo
cation of the Fair-on-the
Square. In fairness to the recre
ation board, I would like to ex
plain what happened.
When the county commis
sioners asked Millen Better
Hometown to find a different
location for the fair this year
because of the construction on
the courthouse, we asked the
recreation department if we
could locate there. Mr. Jim
Jarvis, principal of Jenkins
County Elementary School,
called and offered the use of the
school track for the fair (with
prior approval of the school su
perintendent and board of edu
cation).
Since the recreation board
had reservations about the fair
being located at the recreation
department, we withdrew our
request before the board made
a decision and accepted the of
fer from the elementary school.
Millen Better Hometown ap
preciates the excellent support
and cooperation it receives
from everyone in the commu
nity. We invite all of you
to Jenkins County Elementary
School this Saturday to
shop, visit, eat, listen to the
music and enjoy the Fair-on-
the-Square around the school
track.
