JCHS JROTC Raider team competes
The Jenkins County High
School JROTC Raider Teams,
Male and Male-Mixed, trav
eled to Elbert County Saturday,
Oct. 3, to participate in a 19
school Raider competition. The
Male Team competed against
14 other schools finishing sec
ond overall. In the five events
held, Jenkins County failed to
win or place in any event.
However, by consistently plac
ing toward the top five, the
team finished second overall,
20 points behind first place
Cedar Shoals (Class AAAA)
and one point in front of sec
ond place Campbell (Class
AAAAA).
The War Eagle Male-Mixed
Team found the competition
more to their liking by out pac
ing the 15 teams in their divi
sion to finish first in two
events, second in one event,
third in one event and eighth
in the last event. When all was
said and done, the Male-Mixed
Team finished first overall, two
points ahead of Spaulding
(AAA) and 15 points in front
of third place Alexander
(AAAA). Campbell finished
fourth, Griffin, fifth and the
only other school from the
area, Richmond Hill was sixth.
Jenkins County was the only
single A school in competition.
The Jenkins County Male
Mixed Raider Team got sweet
revenge against the two time
defending National and State
Champion Paulding County in
a 27 school Raider Competi
tion held at Spaulding High
School in Griffin Saturday,
Oct. 10. Last year at this meet,
Jenkins County lost the over
all meet championship in a
tiebreaker against Paulding
County each scoring 14 points.
This year the outcome was sig
nificantly different. Jenkins
County outscored second place
Griffin by 8 points and third
place Paulding County by 14
points. Jenkins County was the
only single A school in com
petition. There were 10 quad A
schools, 13 triple A schools and
3 double A schools competing
in the Male Mixed Division.
The Male Raider Team saw
the going more difficult, but
still managed to trophy twice
and finish fourth overall with
a score of 27. First place Elbert
County scored 17 points; sec
ond place Paulding County, 21
points and third place
Campbell High School, 24
points. Richmond Hill from
Savannah followed the War
Eagles for fifth place with 39
points. Richmond Hill took
overall first place in the Female
Division overpowering State
Champion powerhouse Cedar
Shoals. Low score determines
the winner.

FRATERNAL FINANCIAL
Set your clocks back, change your batteries
Insurance and Safety Fire
Commissioner John W.
Oxendine is urging Georgians to
change the batteries in their
smoke alarms at the same time
they change their clocks back to
Standard time, 2 a.m., Sunday
Nov. 1.
In conjunction with the
"Change Your Clock, Change
Your Battery" fire safety program
sponsored by the International
Association of Fire Chiefs and
the American Bum Association,
Oxendine says the annual change
from daylight saving time to stan
dard time is a good reminder to
make sure your smoke alarm is
working as it should.
“Last year in Georgia there
were 23 fire fatalities in homes
that didn’t have smoke alarms, or
where the alarms didn’t func
tion," Oxendine said. “If you
have a smoke alarm, make sure
it’s in working order. Changing
the battery at least once every
year and cleaning dust from the
device are easy ways to ensure
continued protection of your fam
ily and your property. Having a
working smoke alarm doubles the
chances you will survive a fire in
your home."
Oxendine also recommended
changing batteries in carbon mon
oxide detectors, flashlights and
weather radios, and having an
emergency plan in place in case
severe weather threatens.
November 1 named Retired Educators Day
Gov. Sonny Perdue recently
proclaimed Sunday, Nov. 1, as
Retired Educators Day in
Georgia and urged all citizens
of the state to recognize the
lasting contributions of the
state’s retired educators.
More than 82,000 retired
educators, 18,500 of whom
are members of the Georgia
Retired Educators Associa
tion (GREA), have devoted
their time, energies and tal
ents to public education, pro
viding the educational devel
opment of millions of out
standing Georgia citizens. For
over 51 years, the GREA has
dedicated its efforts to im
proving the welfare of retired
educators and has provided
opportunities for them to be
come involved in community
activities.
Jenkins County Board of Com
missioners Chairman James
Henry, seated, is shown signing
a proclamation designating Nov.
1 as Retired Educators Day in
Jenkins County as Charles
Elmore, a retired educator,
looks on.

Card of Thanks
Thank You
The family of Barbara Lanford Bowers would like to express our sincere gratitude for all the
thoughtful gestures we received during our recent loss. The calls, visits, plants, flowers, food,
cards and memorial gifts helped us through this difficult time.
We know that “B.B” would appreciate all your thoughtfulness and support. B.B. was blessed to
live in a community where so many wonderful and caring people loved her so much. It brings us
great comfort to know that B.B. was so happy here and had so many great friends.
Thank you all so much for your kindness and generosity, and most of all, for your friendship.
Knowing that you will miss her too makes our burden a little easier to bear.
