Georgia Power seeks rate increase
The Atlanta Constitution re
ported last week that Georgia
Power has requested a rate in
crease that would increase the
monthly electric bill of residen
tial customers by $6.98. The
request, if approved by the
Georgia Public Service Com
mission (PSC), would take ef
fect April 1, 2010, raising the
typical customer’s monthly bill
to $109.42. Of that monthly
bill, 42 percent would be attrib
uted to fuel costs.
Georgia Power is asking for
$3.9 billion to cover the costs
of fuel for the period from April
2010 to May 2011. This repre
sents a $470 million increase
over its current fuel cost
charge.
The new filing was delayed
from last spring at the request
of Georgia Power due to the
economic recession.
The PSC will hold public
hearings on the matter in Feb
ruary 2010 with a decision ex
pected to come in March of
next year.
JCMS to collect
food for Golden
Harvest Food Bank
As Christmas approaches, one
local student organization is
learning about the importance of
giving and community service.
Loretta Reynolds, a volunteer
with the Golden Harvest Food
Bank, recently spoke to mem
bers of the Jenkins County
Middle School Future Business
Leaders of America (FBLA).
Mrs. Reynolds explained that
during these tough economic
times more families are in need
of the services of the food bank.
The food bank relies heavily on
donations from the community
not only at Christmas, but also
throughout the year.
Mrs. Reynolds described the
types of food items that were
needed and in response, Pam
Luke, local club adviser, ex
plained that the FBLA chapter
would embarked on their own
community service project, Pan
try Raid. Members will ask fam
ily and friends to raid their pan-
tries, cupboards and kitchen
cabinets of dried and nonperish
able foods for people in need this
holiday season. All food col
lected by the Dec. 16 deadline
will be turned in to the Golden
Harvest Food Bank.
