JCHS Boys Basketball Gets Two Wins
This past week saw the Jenkins County War Eagles boys’ basketball team in action three times. Two of the games were at home, while
a third was on the road. Three games in one week is both physically and mentally taxing on young student athletes, but the War Eagles
were up for the challenge.
On Tuesday night they played host to Claxton High School. Claxton is a regional opponent for the War Eagles. The War Eagles not
only go their first regional win, but they were also able to get their first win of the season. The War Eagle came out on top 49-41.
The second game of the week featured the War Eagles matching up with rival Portal. Portal entered the game ranked 3rd in Class A.
While Portal jumped out to an early lead, the second quarter saw the War Eagles seek to surge back from an 18-point deficit. A 10-0 run
at the end of the second quarter brought the game within 8 points heading to the locker room. However, Portal proved too much and
won the game 71-57.
The final game of the week placed the War Eagles against another regional rival, ECI. The game was a low scoring affair; however, the
War Eagles came out victorious in a very close game. In the end, the final score was 34-32.
The War Eagles are in action this week against Burke County (Tuesday night), McIntosh County Academy (Friday night), and Edmund
Burke Academy (Saturday night). All games will begin shortly after the girls’ game ends at approximately 7:30, and all games are
played at home.

JCHS Girls Looking to Build off Last Season
The 2020-2021 basketball season for the Lady War Eagles was undoubtably a success. The team finished 13-11, with a 9-5 record in re
gional play. Previous seasons had seen records of 7-16 (2019-2020) and 8-15 (2018-2019). In addition to the improved record, the Lady
War Eagles made it to the first round of the GHSA Class A state playoffs where they lost to the eventual state runner up Clinch County.
Coach Jason Boynton, who is in his 7th season as the Lady War Eagles head coach, has his sights set on building off the success of the
previous season. His goal is the state playoffs again, yet this year he has his team’s sights set on winning the region. Thus far in the early
goings of the season, the Lady War Eagles are 1-2 in regional play and 1-5 overall.
Do not let the record fool you concerning this team. Coach Boynton has put his team in tough competition situations in the early season
to prepare them for the regional play. This is starting to show as they played a very tough competition against Class A regional opponent
Claxton who is presently ranked 3rd in Class A. On Saturday night, they inked their first win of the regional season against rival ECI by
a score of 44-29.
Before regional play began this season, the Lady War Eagles had to go head-to-head against some of the best in the state. They lost a
close game to Class AA Vidalia in the first game of the season, a game Coach Boynton still feels that should have one. However, it was
the first game of the season and the shots were just not falling yet. In the second game of the season, they faced off against the Class
AAAAAA and 8th ranked Statesboro. Following that game, it was a run in with 8th ranked Class AAA Burke County. Playing three top
ranked opponents, and two being from a higher class is a difficult start, but it is preparing the girls for the competition ahead.
This season the team relies heavily on three juniors (Jahlyn Allen, Shamya Thomas, Keyasia Coney), and four sophomores (Sha’Nya
Lake, Konstance Langston, Talaya Milton, and Tiajah Chandler). With 7 players all returning from last year’s team, and these 7 players
will return for another year; we can expect great excitement from these girls for a couple of more years.
Unfortunately, injuries have plagued one of the Jenkins County players. Last season, during the regional tournament, Nevaeh Campbell
had an ACL tear in her knee. She worked all summer rehabbing the tear and preparing for this season. During the first regional game of
this season, she tore her ACL in her other knee. She is now out for the season due to this injury. Navaeh was one of the starters before
her injury.
While Claxton is the favorite to win the region this year. Coach Boynton knows this is going to be a tough season ahead in regional
play. The region is deep and according to Coach Boynton anyone can beat anyone on any given night. He said this year’s team will
shoot a lot of three pointers, and he knows they have got to start making those at a higher percentage. In addition, he is working hard on
the defense so that the night the ball is not falling in the basket they will still have the chance to win. He stated concerning the season,
“Early in the season is like putting a puzzle together. You move girls around to different spots trying to figure out where everyone needs
to go. Hopefully, by January, we have it figured out for the stretch run of the season.”
Come out and support Coach Boynton and the Lady War Eagles. This week, they have three home matchups. They will have a rematch
with top ranked Burke County(Tuesday Night), regional rival McIntosh County Academy (Friday Night), and against Edmund Burke
Academy (Saturday Night). The girls’ games will start at 6:00 PM and all three games this week are played at Jenkins County High
School.
