preaching to 21 of the mem
bers— over 100 being a> at.
Borne had measels, ethers wm
at home waiting on tlie sick,
and others still forgot that ii
was preaching day.
Msis Adelia Neal of Banks
ville is teaching at Mt. Pleas
ant, and has a good school, and
is giving great satisfaction. She
seems “to the manner born.”
She was educated at Gaines
ville.
The measels broke up Miss
Ella Ilix's school at Mt. Olivet.
Wilmot district will vote on
the stock-law soon.
John \\\ Gillespie has a line
school down in Franklin. Miss
Lola Ward is assisting him.
There are six or seven coun
try stores in Banks.
We preached in Homer Sun
day atlL o’clock and the con
gregation, big, 'little, old and
young, numbered 35 We had
a breezy time at the close of
tiie services over some church
business matters, in which
James T. Harmon and I’. M.
Edwards were the principle
speakers. - These brethren
think that Homer must do Hie
clean thing this year, and to
this end the Harmon family
subscribed sls, P. M. Edwards
sfiiO,-Jno. Barton $5, Carr Mc-
Donald $2. These are the only
members heard from yet, but
you may write it down Homer
rs going to beat its record this
year.
Having an appointment for
Ist. Sunday night at Midway,
we set "Jumbo” “in the middle
of the road” with his head to
wards the “setting sun” in time
to “get there,” There being
preaching at Gillsville, itnd at
Midway at the same hour, nei
ther church was more than
half full.
The following persons have
contributed to missions at Mid
way, F. G. Oct ell, Zaek Sud
deth, A. 21. Henderson, Jess
Henderson, W. 11. Harris, Rev*
T. C. Pnckett, J. IV. Davis, C.
IV. Headers, John Menders of
Texas, Pro. Hendrix, Boon Sud
deth, if. J. House, Airs. N. Sud
delh, Mrs. Geo. Harris, Mrs.
Geo. Suddeth, Mrs. M. J. Casey,
Mrs. Walker House, Aliss Hat

Miss Frellie Alattox of Mays
ville, has a good school at 2lid
way. She gave us a cordial in
vitation to visit her school.
Jimmie Casey and Mattie
Parks were married Sunday
night. Rev. llr, Curry tied
t he knot.
Zaek Suddeth killed some
shoats which weighed over 300
lbs. each, lie killed a whole
lot of hogs besides. I heard
1 hat they made 50 gallons of
lard.
Midway has its share of nice
girls and boys.
Mr. ‘-Dick” Morris has mov
ed out of Banks.
Mr. Nevton Suddeth fell
from a wagon some days ago,
and hurt himself light badly.
‘•Gathered and worked over.'’
If oar standards of right and
truth were to prevail, this
world would be ruined. We
are constantly undervaluing
lie good, and putting into prom
iaeuce the worthless. The hope
of this world lies in the fact
that truth is mighty and Aviil
prevail in spite of us.
A g ntleman speaking the
other day of a certain religion.!
-ect, said: “So far their growth
ha bi an so small as to demon
; l /ato the fact that they do not
possess any unusual measure
of divine power.”
It would hardly be safe to reck
oa the measure of divine honor
possessed by individuals or
churches, by the success they
have in proselyting others to
! their views, Noah preached
one hundred and twenty years
and it is not certain that he
made a single convert. Jere
miah Avas a man of his God, but
his warnings availed nothing
towards Avinning the inhabi
tants of Jerusalem to bis views
of God’s will.
Not to mention others our
Lord seems to convey the idea
that the prophets generally
were an unpopular class. Ev
en Jesus, himself, was an un
popular preacher, and during
his lifetime made few converts.
God and majorities are not al
ways on (he same side.
Books And Grace.
Good books are a means of
grace. Ignorance is the foe of
true religion, the nurse ol’su
perstition. To lie without
knowledge is not good. A
hundred years ago the fathers
in council inquired, “Why are
Hie people under our care not
better?” The answer, in part,
was, “Because they are not
more knowing.” The people
were exhorted to read good
books regularly and constant
ly. No preacher had done his
duty until he had supplied the
people witii books and had
stirred them up to a fair esti
mate of the advantages of good
books, and habits of reading
and study.
Rainy as last Saturday morn
ing was, a good congregation
met at sit. Pleasant to attend
the Ist, conference for the Ho
mer circuit. There was Bra.
Gunnells, who was never
known to miss a quartely meet
ing, or a meeting at his own
church. Bro. McWhorter, Dr.
Quillian, Al. Harris, Bro Sig
ers and others from Salem,
who are as true as steel, and
when did J. W. Neal ever miss
a meeting? “slack” Edwards
and Jas. Harmon from Homer,
were there. The official mem
bers of sit. Pleasant were pres
ent, of course.
We waited until 12 o’clock
and had to preach and had to
Hold quarterly meeting at last
without the presiding elder.
The stewards assessed for the
preacher in charge SSOO, for the
presiding elder $75. This
amount was apportioned out to
the churches as follows: Sal
em $215, Midway $l3O, Ebenez
er SIOO, sit. Pleasant SSO, and
Homer SSO. About $75 has
been raised during this quar
ter for P. C., and P. E. as fol
lows: Salem S4O, Mb Pleasant
sls, Ebenezer SO, Homer $8.50
and slid way sl. About $75
lias been raised for other ob
jects.
The conference took action
in reference to a littlo debt
hanging over the parsonage.
Let every one who has sub
scribed to this fund pay it to
me or anyone of the stewards
as soon as possible.
The ladies around Mt. Pleas
ant know exactly how to get
up a quarterly meeting dinner,
