Humanity to Horses.—Without
a checkrein horses are constantly
nibbing at tall weeds or anything
the}* can reach before the plough,
or if standing they will put their
heads the ground, getting the halit
es out of the collar (if it is &n East
ern one,) and getting the lines un
der the feet or over the traces.
The check sheuld, however, be
loose enough so as not to interfere
with pulling or free action, and so
tight that they can not drop their
heads low enough to eat anything.
I have seen horses before the plow
with heads drawn up tight to make
them even, 'll,is is down-right
cruelty; besides the flies have pret
ty much their own way with them.
There ought to Le societies in the
country as well as in the cities, tc
prevent cruelty to animals. I have
not a word to say iii favor of the
overcheck; it is shameful and cruel.
Old horses may sell very cheap
ly, or else be given to heartless
men to get rid of them. The rem
nant of their lives i3 thus driven
and whipped out. This is a crying
shame. An old or damaged horse,
if the owner can not afford to keep
him in idleness, should have a vein
in the neck opened, when he will
part with his life and sufferings to
gether without pain. As the cold
weather has come, bits should now
bo covered with new r , strong mus
lin and sewed on tightly. If you
trust to breathing on them or dip
ping in hot watc r, it will be often
er neglected than attended to
Some object of- overing the bit for
fear of carrying disease, but as hors
es should wear their own bridles
there is small danger here —[N, Y.
How to Have healthy Swine
Carefully abstain from giving any
medicine, whatever. Keep large
and small separate, and not more
than ten in a lot Fsed regularly
and liberally a variety of whole
some food, always some bulky food
and iet each feed be eaten up clean
before, more is given. Give wal
lowing places, ashes, char
coal and salt, and plenty of exer
cise in timber pastures, yielding
shade, roots and nuts, acorns, etc.,
but no doubly toured slops. Pro
vide ventilated shutters from
wind and rain, and snow, but no
litter. Hogs with litter get too
warm. If you wish disease, put
your hogs to the straw pile. Main
tain cleulmess in all things. Breed
only mature t.nimals, and never
from a show herd. The offspring
of immature or pampered animals
is predisposed to disease. Give pure
water from deep wells protected
from surface water. Weli water is
not ireezing cold in winter, nor
luke warm in summer (unless fed
by springs,) ponds or pools is dis
ease breeding. Pigs should be for
warded in early spring and kept on
only growing foods—milk, bran
s op, oats, green rye, grasses,
clover, sweet corn—until late fall;
then fatten rapidly on corn mostly,
lout, also green rye, blue grass,
pumpkins, boiled potatoes and tur
nips, with bran, steamed clover,
hay, etc,
peed.—Feed in small quantities
if you do not want to have waste,

Thelrocpiois Indians had many
beautiful and curious legends,
which they took much delight in
relating around their camp-fires. I
will give one or two of these con
densed as much as possible.
The Origin of the Human Race.
—ln the great past deep wafer cov
ered all the earth. The air waß fill
ed with birds, and great monsters
were in possessions of all the seas,
when a beautiful woman was seen
by them falling from the sky. Tho
ducks and other birds, with pinion
overlapping pinion, gathered them
selves to break her fall. They were
unable to support her forever and
a monster tortoise came out of the
deep and volunteered to hold up on
his back He continued ta increase
in size and became a great island.
Twin boys were brought forth of
the woman; one of them the spirit
cfgood, and tho other the spirit of
evil. One caused tobacco to grow'
and all other good things to flour
ish on the island, while the other
created weeds and vermins,
After the lapse of ages, the “Sky
Holder,” whose name was Ta-ru
hia-w T a-ku, created six other pairs
of human beings who were the first
parents of man.
The first pair were left by fhe
side of a great river, now known
among men as the Mohawk; the
second pair were left by a big stone.
They became the Oneida tribe. An
other pair were left on a high bill
and their descendants became the
Onondagas. Thus they were .scat
ered about in New York state, ex
cept one pair, which the “Sky Hol
der” carried up the Roanoke river
in the state of North Carolina, and
left them there. They prospered
and their descendants were called
the Tuscaroras This is the Legen
dacy history of the Six Nations.
But the Onondagas claimed that
they had the right to light up the
council fires, and were accorded
special privileges by the “Sky Hol
der.”
Origin of Tobacc —A boat filled
with medicine men passed near a
village. A great earthquake came
and the inhabitants of the village
were nearly all killed. The next
morning a boat was found drifting
in the stream, containing the bod
ies of two warriors, who had slain
each other in mortal combat; they
were taken from the boat and their
feet tied together and their bodies
burned. From the ashes of these
bodies came the first tobacco stalk.

Tattooing Convicts lor Idententi
f. cat ion.
“The latest fad in prison man
agement,” said a prison official, “is
tatooing. It is a ready means of
identification, and is bound to be
come popular in prison manage
ment. My idea is to tattoo a con
vict every time he is imprisoned,
and then we’ll have his record as
clear as the moon at midnight. Let
each penal institution adopt & dif
ferent mark or monogram and the
problem of identifying oonvi.es wili
be Boivad. It is the simplest and best
ejßtcm yet ptaposed. To some per
sons it may ,seem as harth as brand
ii-g, tun it isn’t'. Tattooing isn’t pain
ful, and tie maiks could be put on
the convict’s back, arms cr leg?, and
would not embarrass reformed con*
victs. Tattooing is now followed in
sever. 1 penal institutions abroad, and
I understand that it is to be introduc
ed in the stato prison at Joliet, 111. It
might be a good thing to try in the
Georgia Peniientiary.
