*AQRCULI URAL. ifiuu-dy J'or “bleat” in (.’able. When call I* are first turned in o n tVf'.'h prislnje whore th* her bage is von succulent and abund ant, they are very likely to gorge themselvas, producing what is call ed ‘•hove**’ r bloat The paunch is rapidly 111 led with the soft, green i, and :■ 3 soon as it becomes uioi.it and heated it begins to fer ment, and tho carbonic acid gas i teratcd distends the stomach, of tea bursting its walls, unless the animal is soon relieved by artificial means. When cattle are changed from a close-cropped pasture into one where the herbage is plentiful, they should be allowed to feed for nn hour or two at a time, and nev er at all early in the morning while tho dew is on, for wet grass or clo ver is far more likely to produce bloat than when only the natural juices of the plants are present. The cause of bloat in a cow is due to the fact that die gorges herself with the succulent leaves of the Kiffircorn or sorghum, as it is only a variety of til - latter plant. You should wait until the dew has dried off in the morning before turning the cow into Ihe held/ then leave her there only an hour or two in th* forenoon and ab >ut the same length of time in tho afternoon. After a few weeks she will become accustomed to Ike food and only eat a moderate quantity at a lime, and she may then be loft in the field all day, if more convenient than to remove her as at first. Cat tle should also have salt more fre quently when feeding on succulent food Ilian when ob that which is moderately dry. Care of Bees in Winter, — There arc various methods of preparing bees fer winter so that no subse quent cars is needed. One is to place the hives above the snow lines, packing them in chaff, leav es, sawdust or fine hay with a rim two inches wide under each hive. When prepaid in this manner the entrance can net be clogged by snow or dead bees. Should a warm day occur, the bees cas enjoy a llight. Another method is to bury Ihe bees in a pit ©r “damp,” where, of course, no attention can he giv en. Beos stored in a properly ar ranged (dlar or repository require no attention except to see that jjiev are undisturbed by rats or mice, and that tho temperature u .,d ventilation are correct. An effective way of getting lid of mice or rats in a Collar is to poison them with equal ports of arsenic, flour su’d sugar. The temperature should be kept at a bout 45 degrees during i;,e aarly part of the winter. After ihe dees have commenced brood wring, .-ay in February, a higher V,. jiperalur* is beneficial, and it liiav r be grauualiy raised, to aooufc 55 deg es. Authorities differ in ) sU■ <*i* i * > vcntilatioa; out pur© in tin- <■ nr can do no harm, and there* . o better method of sup ply. ■ ;han through tiles laid Ueiow si . irosi line. A . n abund ance oi - es should be left in the Hive, a- : would, probably he fier ier to h ia u w coloaies to starve than to dislurb all the hives by ex , amining them to learn ifany need ed teediug. Should it he discover , cd, however, that a colony is short of stores, and there art) no combs of honey to give it, candy n ado of granualated sugar may bo fed. Hives, as usually prepared for winter, are often partially buried in snow. This does no harm, but may be beneficial, until a warm day comes and the bees wish to fly, when the snow must bo shoveled away from the entrance, or Ihecov er removed, and the bees be allow ed to take their “purifying flight,” lrotn the top ot the hive. Hives standing in tho open air should be protected against tho intrusion of mice. Have tho entrance onlyoae tourth of an inch high and protect ed with tin. Skunks sometimes scratch at the entrance ol a hive; the bees come out to learn the cause ot tho disturbance, and are caught. A box-trap set for tha skunk is the best prevoatative. Ihe animal never discharges its weapon while in a box trap. When bees are buried in a pit, a sandy hill-side should be selected as the site, and a tile drain put ua derneath, W lien these precautions have been neglected car© should be taken that no water stands up on the surface around the pit. Ilealthtulncss of Various Occupa tions. Assuming the normal average death rate of th® community as the unit of comparison, and calling it 1009, particular occupations may be regarded as healthy or unheal thy, according as the do?.th rates among those pn .-suing them tall abova or below that figure.
