This loss is miaous to farm soils, and should be prevented in gatdsns by sowing rye as seen ss a row of bed is vacant. Another unmeutioned merit is the healthtnlness of rye Hour as an occasional ehango of diet, far prefer able to changing from diet to drugs. The hardinsss and sturdy vigor of rye add so greatly to its usefulness ia a ceurse for field rotation that it might well be made a question for discussion wherever a debating club is eatabhsa ed in a farming district, whether elov •r or rye is cf most benefit to the farm and the farmer. Care vf Wood Ashes.— Wood ash es aro excellent manure for most soils. Even when analysis shows potash to be present, the wood ah is helpful, sines it contains more or loss phos phate, and its potash is a forp> to lib erate plant food in tho soil that wonld otherwise on unavailable. Thera is no better solvent for reverted phosphate, and the drilling of word ashen with *nt endangering other property from fires It is not the presence of live coals that cause this danger usually. These are generally pretty well juard ed againet. This in contact with wool, woolen rags or any oilv substanes will generate fire. Ash es should, therefore, never be left in wooden receptacles Old barrels, so often ased for this purpose, are mast dangerous of ali. It does not cost much O build a stone or brick ask tones, and using it also for a smoke house avoids two cf the most common seurcea of destructive firce among farm buildings. Quite an ingenious way of cooling a journal that can not be stopped is to hang a short endless belt on the shaft next to the box, and let the lowerpa.it of it run in cold water. The turning of the shaft carries the belt slowly around, bringing freeb cold water eon tinnally in contact with the heated shart, aad without spilling or spatter ing a drop of the water. At a receut meeting of the Anaeri can uuion, Ernest E. Thompson of Canada, said that some birds, especial ly sparrows, have Tentriloquial pow ers. Birds, when surprised in the act of singing, will be silent for a moment and then give torth a faint song that seems to come from a distance, though the singar be not farther than ten feet away. Thrushes and robbing, the lac turer said, also have this power. Since Humboldt witnessed fun thrown from the voleaoo CVtepaxi in Mexico, in 1803, it has been found that the phenomenon is repeated from time to time during eruptions, and that it occurs also in other volcanoes af the Andos.
