The picnic at Shore & Hix’s saw mills last Saturday, was a pleasant one. A good crowd was present. The Union Sunday-school at the Presbyterian church last Sunday was well attended. The lessons were good. Several teachers in town yester day before the examining board. The common-school term is four months school. Mr. A. W, Mize informs those who are raiding his fish-pond that it must be stopped, or he will give them the full extent oftiie law. Mr, Idus Bov/den of Belton, was here Friday and Saturday in the in terest of a school. The school has been made up, and Mr Bowden will commence about June 17th. Dr. Stapler conducted services at the M, E. Church last Sunday night, He read from II chapter Proverbs—“l Wisdom promiseth godliness to her children, 30 and safety from evil company, 20 and direction in good ways.” After which the doctor reviewed the chap ter with some sound remarks. Th© attendance, though net as large as usual, gave good attention. Mr. John Ilill, Sr., took quiG sick last Sunday evening, but Mon day evening the writer called to see the old gentleman and found Tim resting easy and/with 'bright prospects of being restored to his usual health in a lew days. Tuesday, a singular arrest was made: Two officers from another county were in pursuit of a negro who had broken into a store. As they rode into Mr Lit tle’s livery stable and put up their horses, they saw their prey sitting with case on a chair in front of them. Wilmot, the only 6on of Mrs Wilmot, formerly ot Banks, but now of Gainesville, killed him self by taking two ounces ot lauda num on last Wednesday evening, in the city of Atlanta, where he had been staying for sometime. It seems that he had been unwell for sometime and suffered a great deal with a throat affection. He became despondent, and his mind became unbalanced, and in a tit of tempor ary aberaticn of mind, committed the rash deed that ended his lile. He was a promising youth and was considered honest and capable by his employers, and had many friends. During the last y T ear or two he hsd been running ©n the railroad, and had won his way up to a nice, responsible position. The news of his death was telegraphed to his mother and sister in Gaines ville, but they did not reach him until lit® was extinct. It was in deed a terrible shock to them, and they have the sympathy of Iriends in this section. A Pleasant Trip to Atlanta —The Road Congress —A Notable as semblage—Sights, Scenes and Impressions, On Tuesday evening of last week, in company with Messrs. J. K, Thompson and J. a. Borders, we bounded the Air Line train at Lula, on our way to Atlan ta as delegates to the Road Congress and after a pleasant run ot two hours, we were ushered within the gates of the far-famed “gate city", of the South.
