Friday morning 20ih ins!., at 10 o’clock a. m., the county conven tion met at New Salem to transact the business cf the association. The convention was well attended and the report of the different schools was, indeed, Haltering; showing a grand stride m the Sunday school work. Among other important resolutions, one on motion by Col. P. M, Edwards to make tin place of holding the annual c invention and celebration permanent at Ho mer, was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows; President, H. P. Quil liau; Ist vivee-president, C. T. Ba con; 2nd vice-president, Rev. Dow dy; secretary, A. 11. Stapler; ast.. P. M. Edwards; treasurer, W, B. Mason; organist, Mrs. W. B Mason; chorister, P. M, Edwards, At noon a delightful dinner was served by the noble women pres ent, after which, a warm and social gathering followed. The o?iven lion adjourned until July 1890. At 10 o’clock am., Saturday fol lowing, about 1,500 people assem bled around the neatly decorated stage to witness the contest of eight large schools for the laurels, that go to the best recitation, speech and song—all oi which merits the praise and admiration of every one present. When the hftur tor din ner arrived and the well tilled bas kets opened arid tlio contents spread, greeting the multitude with welcome, it seemed a cornu copia which gladdened the hearts of the anxious little boys and girls At 2 o’clock, p. in, Mr. Hubert Estes of Gainesville, held the aud ience spell-bound for more than an hour with ihe importance of early training and the necessity of ihe great Sunday school work, Ilis speech was well studied—well de livered, and deserves the highest respect of the people in Gainesville for such success. Barber’s Band 6f Harmony Grove, interested the exercise with deiight ful music, and the little fellows were continually applauded; some of the little girls say they are just as sweet as can be. New York, July 29.—Ballutting on the cotton exchange by-laws to day resulted in do ug away with fees to the supervisory committee, and pro viding for members of standing com* miitees to act until their successors were appointed. Birmingham, Ala, July 29—At Pratt miDes last night, Thomas John son went to chureb with the wife of King McDonald. On the way home they met McDonald, who said: ‘‘Whit aro you doing with my wife, you scoundrel,” ami attacked Johnson vrifn a knife. He stabbed him several times iu tbe abdomen, inflicting inju ries from which he d.ed to day. Mrs Donald fled and has uot been arrested. Columbia, S.C’, July 29.—1n York county vesterday, while a colored lad about 17 years old, was carelessly handling a pistol tho weapon was dis charged, the hall etriking his sister iu the back and inflicting a wound from which he died in a tew hours. The coroner’s jury rendered a rordict of ac cidental homicide. Cbarlotte, N. C., July 29.—Albert Gray, colored, made an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide here this tnotning by sbootiDg himself. Gray had fcciae trouble with his wife and went into his room, took the pistol anst fired. The wound made is not neces sarily a fatal one. Louisville, Ivy., July 29.—William Schick and Mrs. Hannah fiecker weie killed at the 18:n street crossing of the Louisville and Southern railroad, in this city last evening, while endeivor ing to cross the tracks. 11 nry Pa - ter wr,a probably fatally injured.
