Briggs filled the pul pit at the Baptist church last night. The congregation was large and many went forward to be prayed for. Mr. Sumpter joined byleltler, which severed his membership with a church in South Carolina twelve years ago. Burned to Death. A little child of Clinlun Emm ett's met with a horrible accident last Friday about 12 m., which re suited in iis death about 10 p. m. that night. The little fellow was a line, vigorous hr beef ten months, and crawled inlo the fire in Hie ab sence of its mother and was burn ed from ihe soles of its feet to Jhw top of its head almost, the skin be ing literally burned from tin chest and abdomen. Medical aid was summoned as quick as possible, but the poor lit tle innocent suffered mortal agony for near two hours before a physi cian arrived and administered a hypodermic injection of morphine, and applied other remedies for its relief. It then became quiet, but all that could be done by the phy sician, kind parents and friends, only afforded partial relief until death released it from its agony. Its funeral and burial took place from the Baptist church Saturday evening, Rev. Mr. Duncan offieiat ing. A number of distills have started up since the peach crop came in. Now and then the bloated gauger passes through here with a nose as red as a coal of tire. Is there not reason that the penitentiaries are full, murders are committed and hang ings take place every week? The very 1 tw that executes the murders’ death on the gallows, set the trap to put two-thirds of their necks in the Eoosa and launch them into eternity, from a life of darkness that might hava been spent in a pro longed existence of sunshine and grayhead*! The laws of the land in protecting are an imposition and a gr@ss insult (if not waring) against civilization, Christianity, religion, education, peace and pros perity. You may elect your men and till your representative halls with the ablest talent the world af fords, but on the whiskey traffic they are drones in suppressing its evil. Mr. A, D. The throe who were sold mast serve their purchasers for 4 mouths. Charleston, S. C., Aug. 26. Re ports were received to-dav from the Ashehoo rice fields by F. W. Wagon er, E Means and other big planters that harvesting had been commenced It is estimated that the fields iu that vicinity will yield from fifty to sixty bushels per aere, with tolerably lair weather from now out. Chattanooga, Tenr,., Aug. 26.—A vholesa c poisoning occurred here to day through the use ot impure tainted meat. Lydia Wildham keeps a color ed boarding house and has teo young negro men boarders, working at oneot the furnaces. One hour a her the lot weie taken violently sick from tainted meat. Some of them will die. Raleigh, n C , Aug. 26 —News baa been recoiled of an outrageous crima ia Yancey county. John Hughes and a woman, his mistress, were seated on a log in a pass in the mountain. El. Murphey rode up and esited the wo man to go down the mountain with him. This she refused to do. Hugh cs then told Murphey to go home to his family. Murphev walked towards Hughes with a revolver drawn, threat ening to shoot him. Hughes picked up a stone, the woman jumped between the men. Hugl.es put his arms upon the woman’s shoulder, and Mnrphey shot him, striking him in the temple and killing him instantly. Ha then pulled his coat off and spread it over his face. Then he and the wr> man proceeded to rifle the pockets of rhe dpad man, taking therefrom quite a sum of money. He threatened to kill her if she told of the crime, but not fearing Murphey’* threats she told Hughes’ brother. Hughes was a wid over. Murphey is a married man and has been lodged ia the Yancey county jail. Asheville, n. C., Aag. 2C—.A seri ous stabbing affray occurred yesterday at Turkey Creek camp ground, thir teen miles west of this city. While the campmeeting was in progress a man by the name of Will Fore and Amos Lunsford got into sn alter cation it the spring, near one corner of the ground, and within a few sups of where the services Were goiug on. Words brought on blows, when Fore drew & huge knife aud stabbed Luns ford in the abdomen. The wounded man is to day reported to be dying. NO. .17.
