SOOT.
Soot, freely sprinkled among the
rows of young onion plants, is one of
the best preventatives of mildew and
onion fly.—lndianapolis News.
BORDEAUX.
The Bordeaux mixture is the proper
remedy to use for all fungous trou
bles; viz., mildew and rust of beans;
potato and tomato rot and leaf-blight;
melon and cucumber diseases; celery
leaf-blight and rust, etc. The half
strength mixture (two pounds copper
sulphate, two pounds quicklime, fifty
gallons water) is strong enough to
use in the vegetable garden, except
for potatoes.—lndianapolis News.
. VEGETABLES.
For most vegetables the soil should
be of a sandy nature, with a good sub
soil for drainage. Such a soil will
produce fine crops of lettuce, spin
ach, radishes, cucumbers, beets, as
paragus, rhubarb.
Weedy fence corners are just the
places for cultivating small fruits, as
the raspberry and blackberry very
cheaply and profitably. There is al
ways a good market for such fruits,
especially the cultivated berry, and if
the farmer would select some corner
on his farm which he may now con
sider next to worthless and which
he has left to grow up in weeds, with
a very little labor he could grow a
berry patch that would in a few years
give him a nice addition to his in
come.—Epitomist.
DOGWOOD SHRUBS.
The garden varieties of the dog
wood are among the most valuable
shrubs in use, being especially
adapted for moist and shady places.
Some of them have richly colored
twigs which produce a fine color ef
fect in the winter. All are hardy and
adapt themselves readily to a variety
of soils and climates.
Flowering dogwood (Cornus flori
da) is very showy in flower and also
beautiful in autumn when the leaves
change color before falling. The
plant is of tree form, rather slow in
growth and ordinarily from ten to fif
teen feet high. It has branches
spreading almost horizontal. The
flowers appear early in spring and in
full bloom the shrub has a striking
appearance, owing to the whorls of
leaves that surround the blossoms.
It bears a bright scarlet fruit.
Red osier grows freely in marshy
ground in Canada and the northern
States. Its main stem is prostrate
and from it many shoots grow six to
ten feet high. These shoots are green
in summer, but scarlet in winter. The
flowers are -white or cream and are
followed by white fruit. A varie
gated leaved variety can be obtained
and in some respects is best, having
leaves that in summer are broadly
and irregularly margined with yellow
and white.—Washington Star.
I DAMAGE BY RABBITS.
It is unusual for rabbits to peel
trees at this time of the year, but I
am satisfied that the methods of pre
venting this destruction during the
winter would be efficient and safe
now. Among these are the following,
stated in the order of preference by
myself:
1. Painting with white lead and
raw linseed oil, made as thick as
house paint.
2. Painting or spraying with the
boiled lime sulphur wash containing
considerable sediment.
3. Rubbing the trees with tallow,
blood, a freshly killed rabbit, or the
entrails of any animal.
4. Protecting by means of wire
netting.
5. Use of poison, traps, dogs and
gun.
Asa matter of fact, No. 5 should
be combined with any one of the oth
ers. During the winter rabbits will
often leave the trunks of trees alone
if freshly cut branches are dropped
on the ground where they can not
fail to get them. I do not know if
this would work in summer, but rec
ommend a trial.
A gentleman has just written to
me that he used coal tar successfully
for borers, but did not state the kind
of trees on which he used it. I am
seeking further informaivon on the
■subject. If coal tar or gas tar did
!did not injure his trees, it would be
effective in preventing damage by
borers and rabbits, but I do not think
it is safe to recommend this as a pre
ventive, for, in my opinion, there is
some danger of damage to the trees.
- excepting under unusually favorable
conditions. I once saw what waa for
merly a nice orchard that had fc*een
killed by the application of mined
tar and linseed oil. —Prof. H. A. Sur

Egg-Preserving Process.
Figgs six months old are said to re
tain their new-iaid freshness when
■preserved by this process, adopted by
a firm in the north of England; Act
ing on the theory that an egg decom
poses owing tb the entrance of bac
teria through the shell, the eggs, by
the new process of preservation, are
first disinfected and then immersed
in a vessel of hot paraffin wax In
a vacuum. The air in the shell is
extracted by the vacuum, and atmo
spheric pressure is then allowed to
enter ithe vessel when the hot wax
is pressed into the pores of the shell
which thus hermetically seals it.
Evaporation of the contents of the
egg, which has a harmful effect, is
thereby prevented, and the egg is
practically sterile.
The First Auto.
There arrived at Bagdad the other
day the first postal automobile and
it filled the minds of the natives
with wonder and awe. The ear car
rier the mails, hitherto borne on
camels’ backs, from Aleppo, a dis
tance of 625 miles, in sixty hours.
This can hardly be called a speed
record, but when it 1s remembered
(that the roads are rough camel
tracks leading through the deep sands
of the Syrian desert and the stony
plains of Mesopotamia the journey at
the rate of little more than ten miles
an hour appears quite a creditable
performance. The Moslems of these re
gions, hitherto steeped in the fiercest
fanaticism, now gladly intrust parcels
and missives to this new ship of the
desert.

A Pinnacle Rock.
In his book on “Nautical Charts”
G. R. Putnam mentions the recent
discovery in Blue Hill Bay, Me., of
a pinnacle rock, only six feet in
diameter at its -top, and projecting
within seven feet of the surface of
the water, which rises nearly eight
feet. The rock was discovered by
means of a wire drag. Its existence
is mentioned as an example of the
difficulty, even in well-known waters,
of making -certain that no isolated
rocks are lying in wait for heedless
victims. _
