LESSON FOR JUNE 3
JEREMIAH, THE PROPHET OF
COURAGE
LESSON TEXT—Jeremiah
QOLDBN TEXT—Watch ye, etand fast
In the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
—1 Corinthians 16:13.
REFERENCE MATERlAL*—Jeremiah
18:1-9; 16:1-4: Matthew 2:17, 18.
PRIMARY TOPIC —Song Who Honor
Their Father.
JUNIOR TOPIC—The Story of ths
Rechabltea. _____
INTERMEDIATE AND BENIOR TOPIC
-Jeremiah, the Courageous Prophet.
YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC
—Joromlah’e Service to Hlo Nation.
Jeremiah was one of the last proph
ets of Judah. He saw the nation go
Into the Bubylonlan Captivity and Je
rusalem destroyed, after which he
went Into Egypt. He wee a lonely,
mlaunderatood and unpopular prophet.
He was most bitterly hated and per
secuted. His own countrymen turned
against him. He was placed In stocks
and then thrown Into a horrible dun
geon from which he narrowly escaped
with hie life. The teacher should give
a little sketch of hi* life. The fol
lowing Is suggested:
1. His Call (1:2-10).
Z His Commission (till-10).
8. His Sympathetic Heart (4:10).
4. His Great Sorrows (10:15-21).
5. The Divine Power Which Urged
Him Forward and Sustained Him
(10:7-9).
Because he was called upon to
prophesy against hie own nation and
at the command of God urged them to
surrender to the Babylonians, he was
regarded as a traitor guilty o treason
against his own nation.
I. The Reohabltes' Test (vv. 1-5).
In the days of JeholaMm, the Lord
charged Jeremiah to bring the Becho
bltes Into the house of the Lord and
test them regarding the drinking of
wtnei This he did In a place where
the people might behold them, the aim
being to teach Judah by example.
The father of the Rechobltes had
given command that they should not
drink wine. Their Altai obedience
put to shame the children of Judah
for their lack of obedience. Jonadab,
the father of the Bechabltes, was only
a man but the one whose commands
Judah disregarded was the Almighty
God thetr Creator and Savior. It Is
God’s plan that every man be teeted.
Being a froe agent, he can have char*
acter only through testing.
11. Ths Filial Loyalty of th# Reo
habltoo (w. 8-11).
Though they were out of tbalr own
country In the midst of a foreign peo
ple they refused to drink wine, d*-
daring that they had been true to the
Instructions of Jonadab all their Uvea.
It Is a fine thing when children re
member their father* and render
obedience to their commands.
111. The Loyalty of the Reohebltee
In Contreet With the Oleloyelty pt
Judah (w. 12-16).
1. The Appeal (w. 13, S4>. B*
made the appeal on the basis of the
filial loyalty at the Rechabltea. He
slbo reminded them that he had
spoken to them In person, rising up
early to do so.
3. The Ministry of the Prophets
(vv. 18, 10). When the people failed
to render obedience to God, he sent
to them the prophets, who pleaded
with them to amend their ways by
turning away from their Idols. Mat
thew Henry Indicates the polnte of
contrast somewhat as follows! (1)
The Rechabltea were obedient to one
who was but a man; the few• dis
obeyed the Infinite and etefnal Ood.
(2) Jonadab was dead and could not
know of their disloyalty or correct
them for It. Ood Is all-knowing and
lives forever and will punish for dis
obedience. (8) The Rechabltea were
never reminded of their obligations,
but Ood sent His prophets to speak
to His people (4) Jonadab left the
charge but no estate to support the
charge, but Ood gave the people a
goodly land and prospered them In It
(5) Ood never assigned His people n
task as hard as Jonadab'a, but Ood's
people disobeyed Him while the
Rechnbttes obeyed their father.
IV. Judgment Upon (He Jewe tor
Disobedience (v. 17).
Ood declared that He would bring
Judgment upon them according to
what He had said. Judgment Is laid
upon those who disobey and rebel
against Ood
V. Reward of the Reohebltee tor
Their Loyalty (tt. 18, 10).
Because they had been true to the
commands of Jonadab, they should
always have a representative before
Ood. Ood has such a regard for Alla)
obedience that He lets no act go un
rewarded.
