Negro, Held for Gwinnett Killing,
Brought to Tower.
Mell Roberson, a negro, held
on 1 warrants charging him with
the murder of Victor Dowis, a
former sheriff, was being closely
guarded Monday by officers at
the Fulton county tower to which
he was rushed Sunday §fternoon
byJGwinnett authorities.
Roberson was brought here by
deputy sheriff J. M, Bernard im
mediately after his arrest near
Norcross. The deputy told Ful
ton county officers that Gwinnett
county officers feared for the
safety of the negro.
Mr. Dowis was shot from am
bush last week in Gwinnett coun
tv on the banks of the Chatta
hoochee river. Considerable mys
tery attached to the slaying, and
officers have been busy working
on many clues.
Warrant for ißoberson’s arrest
was sworn out last Thursday by
S. F. Dowis, brother of the de
ceased. Until Sunday the officers
sought the negro in vain.
Suspicion, according to dis
patches from Norcross, attached
to Roberson after he is alleged
to have been discovered in the
boat belonging to the dead man,
and also after it was learned that
he had quoted as saying on the
day of the homicide that he was
going to Atlanta to work.
Newspapers on Monday were
vnable to interview the negro,
but officers at the Fulton county
tower said the negro told them
he was Ashing on the day of the
murder a mile below the p’ace
where the crime recurred, and
that he got into the boat alter it
bad floated dowu the stream. Of
ficers aay he told them another
negro was with him at the time
The coroner’s jury which in
vestigated the homicide returned
a verdict “that the deceased
came to his death by gunshot
wounds inflicted by person or
persons unknown.’’—Monday’s
