Two Printed Printers.
Barker Bradford tells an amu
sing story about one of the many
funny incidents in his early experi
ence in the publishing business.
“Fred. Van Campon and I star
ted an alleged funny paper in Chi
cago some years ago,” said Brad- j
ford. “Ve set the type ourselves, I
and in fact did all of the mechan
ical work as well as attending to I
the editorials and business depart- j
ments, such as they were. We j
didn’t need a cashier, so we saved j
nothing in that dedartment. One j
day, in some manner or other, fifty j
cents came in the office. It was in j
the winter time, and we were al- I
ways cold and hungry. We slept |
on the floor, using the exchange |
list for sheets and the planer of I
Van Campcn’s shoes with our coats!
over them for pillows. When we]
got holt of the fifty cents there be
came a matter of discusion as to
whether we should buy crullers
and coffee or something to cover
ourselves when sleeping. There
was steam in the building but the
pipes grew very cold in the night.
Well, wo ‘jeffed ora quads’ to dec
ide tiic question, and the bed
clothes side won. Van Campon
said he knew where two good |
quilts could be purchased for twen
ty-five cents each, and off he star- i
ted to obtain them. It was Satur
day night and very cold, an! when
we lay down on the exchange list
and put the quilts over us, we both
felt that heaven was on earth, if it
wasn’t anywhere else. The quilts
were beauties, for the money.
They pictured all kinds of animals
in printed colors—red, green, yel
low, brown, black, white, gray, olive, ]
purple, blue, orange,-and all other |
colors —and |were of light calico j
material, filled with cotton-batting]
which, in the night, all went down j
to one end like shot in a canvass |
bag. I don’t remember just how it
happened, during the night the jan
itor turned on the steam. Our
windows and doors were closed
tightly, and the little room soon ]
became as hot as a cheap Turkish j
bath-house.We —poor devils—worn j
out from the day’s struggle at the
case, and weak from starvation,
• did not wake until it was daylight
I remember opening my eyes first.
I was as wet as a sponge in a bath
tub aud as hot as a piece of Roas
ting pork. I awakened him and
we both started for the window, and
threw it open. 1 will never forget
the condition poor Van Campen
was in, and he says the same of
mo. lie had a yellow dromedary
on his hip, a pink lizard on his neck,
a purple toad on his arm, and ali
kinds of highly colored birds and
boasts all over his entire frame,
lie said 1 looked like a tattooed
fiend, and I thought it might be se
if I looked anything like him.
The paper ‘busted’ the next Week.

MORSELS OF GASTRONOMY.
Tn the gastronomic calendar it Is writ
ten: “About this time look out for applo
pie.”

things,” is made of apples and custard.

in gastronomic order at present, and a
dinner course 1 v no means to be despised.
Fruits in great variety and greater
abundance now appear in market, rad
these from tho Pacific coast elicit espe- i,!
enthusiasm.
Stewed pears and plums, “old fp.mia r
friends,” arc again added to the alleged
fascinations of Sunday night tea at sum
mer hotels.
An observer at table d’hote says that
no two people eat green corn alike, rad
he writes to a local paper to know the
“best form.”
To follow the gastronomic fashion of
the elegant society youths of the peri >4
it is necessary to sprinkle cinnamon on
mu since lons.
There is complaint of tho inferior qual
ity of imported sardines of late, and if is
moro difficult than ever to decide which
is tl o best brand.
I.iteraturo based upon tho medicinal
benefits of watermelon becomes tiresome,
for tho reason that every man, woman
rud child in the United States must 1.0
familiar with it.

“Yes,” asserted Bobby. “Still,” he
