THE SPANISH NAVY.
Unusual Attention Being Paid
To Its Improvements.
Madiiid, Dec. 1 I.—The minister
of marine, Admiral Bermejo, is
paying urgent attention to the
improvement of the Spanish na-
It is announced that General Az
carraga. the late premier and for
mer minister of war, is to retire
definitely from politics.
General Weyler received the lead'
ors of the conservatives and sever
al generals.
The newspapers here say that'tln
Cuban Reformists, at the opening
of the cortez, will demand the trial
of General Weyler.
A supposed anarchist, disguised
as a woman, was recently found,
with hands and feet tied, in a ditch
near Saragossa. The man traveled
on the same train as General Wey
ler, and it is believed he intended to
kill the general . but owing to his
failure to do so, other anarchists
pinioned him and loft bin to his
fate.

LaFayetto.
LaFayette, Dec. 14.—An inter
esting social event was the mar
riage of Miss Bertie Ilealen and
Mr. Robert Berry, of Morristown
Tenn., Thursday at 11 o’clock.
'Pho marriage took place at Beau
mont, the beautiful country home
of Mrs. A. I. Leet, the mother of
the bride.
Dr. Sullivan, of Centenary col
lege performed the'ceremony, after
which a delightful repast was ser
ved. Immediately thereafter the
young married couple left for Mor
ristown, whero they will make their
future home.
It develops that the state of
Georgia was very cleverly buncoed
out oSubout SIO,OOO, and various
railroads out of $5,000 by E. A.
Richards and W. C. Hale, lessees
of the Northwestern railroad.
When the lessees quit they l owed
the state for two quarters, and
their total liabilities were about
$15,000. But they did not quit
the deal without feathering their
n *sts. They had SII,OOO in cold
cash and net earnings of the read
and SB,OOO duo other roads and
the employes. The Southern Rail
way was a heavy loser. The state
is now suing the bondsmen of the
lessees for the $10,000.. When the
road is put on the block all this
internal rottenness will come out,
it is expected Richards is in New
York and Hale is “out of sight.’’
f Are You Weakl
Weakness manifests itself in the loss of
ambition and aching bones. The blood is
watery; the tissues are wasting—the door is
being opened for disease. A bottle of Browns’
Iron Bitters taken in time will restore your
strength, soothe your nerves, make your
blood rich and red. Do you more good
than an expensive special course of medicine.
Browns’ Iron Bitten is sold by all dealers.

The Tennessee Coal Iron and

whence it will be forwarded to Ko

A trial shipment so Alabama ir

shipment being the first of a se

Japan heretofore was supplied by
European furnaces, but Alabama
has underbid these.
How To Prevent Pneumonia
At this time of the year a cold
is very easily contracted, and if left
to run its course without the aid
of some reliable cough medicine is
liable to result in that dread dis
ease pneumonia. Wo know of no
better remedy to cure a cough or
cold than Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy. We have used it quite ex
tensively and it has always given
entire satisfaction —Glagah, Ind.
Ter. Chief.
This is the only remedy that is
known to be a certain preventive
of pnemuonia. Among the many
thousands who have used it for
colds and lagrippe, we have never
yet learned ol a single case having
lesulted in pneumonia. Persons
who have weak lungs or have rea
son to fear an attack of pneumonia
should keep the remedy at hand.

Santa Claus,
Ouce upon a midnight dreary, as
I pondered weak and w’eary over
all the Christmas presents that a
boyish fancy draws, while with
sleep I tried to tussle, suddenly I
beard a rustle, like the noise of
Santa Claus. Though with fright
I fairly shuddered for fright I had
no cause—it was only Santa Claus.
1 hen 1 listened more intently to
, the sound that crept up gently to
my chamber, where my wonder al
most caused my heart to pause,
and I heard the candy spilling, as
, the stocking he was filling and I
wished I'd left a shilling there for
i dear old Santa Claus. And the
noise I heard so plainly in the
room adjoining pa's was only San
ta Claus. Anxious now to get a
peep down the stairway did I
creep, all impatient for a glance,
i although against the laws, and it
filled my heart with dread, as with
sudden tear he fled and jumped in
to mama's bed—naughty, naughty

VACCINATING VIRUS.
Poisoned Love’s Spring and May
Lead To A Damage Suit,
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 14. —One of
the most peculiar damage suits on
record will be the outcome of the
virus war now in progress in this
city. A score of th ) city physi
cians and policemen aro visiting
every home, office, shop and store
vaccinating by force, when neces
sary, and me of the unwilling vic
tims was a young lady of IB who
was soon to become the bride of Col_
E. E. Cavaleri, 74 years old, and
a veteran of the union army. Col.
Cavaleri says this vaccinating phy
sician has come between him and
his affianced, and ho is in earnest
when he says the city of Atlanta
must pay for his wounded feel- |
ings.
Cavaleri states that he was en
gaged to a young lady and love's
young dream was not marred un
til this officious doctor came upon
the scene. In his vaccinating
rounds he met the young lady, who
demurred to being vaccinated be
c-.use she said she was going to get
married.
The old gentleman says the doc
tor dissuaded her from getting
married, saying that it would be
better for her to got vaccinated
than married.
His sweetheart finally consent
ed to be vaccinated, and the doc
tor went on his way, never dream
ing perhaps, that he had rent two
loving hearts in twain. When the
aged lover returned to his promis
ed young bride he found where was
all warmth and welcome before a
cool reception,
She flatly refused to marry him
giving as a reason that the doctor
had advised her that vaccination
was bettor than marriage. All he
could say availed nothing—she
was obdurate, and declined to mar

An Old Idea.
Every day strengthens the belief of emi
nent physicians that impure blood is the
cause of the majority of our diseases.
Twenty-five years ago this theory was used
as a basis for the formula of Browns’ Iron
Bitters. The many remarkable cures effected
by this famous old household remedy are
sufficient to prove that the theory is correct.
Browns’ Iron Bitters is sold by all dealers.
Bill Sampson’s Adventure,
Bill Sampson, a Cascade Valley
quarry man, a few days since went
up In the mountains near his home
to dig some sassafras. While
searching for the roots he encoun
tered a huge blacksnake. The rep
tile was close to a rock wl en he
found him, and the rock was flank
ed by a log. Sampson noticed a
large hole at an angle of the rock
and log, for which the snake made
on being surprised.
Catching up a pine knot, he
threw' it at the snake, grazing its
body. On receiving the blow, it
sprang at its antagonist. Samp
son stumbled over some bushes,
and the snake coiled itself about
him in an instant. A hickory
limb was close to the man’s hand
and reaching for it, he struck the
snake several sharp blows on the
head.
The latter turned rnd ran into
its hole, dragging Sampson close to
it. The man braced his feet
against the rock, but could not
extricate himself, as the snake
had twisted half its body around
his left leg. Sampson was nearly
an hour in this predicament, until
he finally thought of his knife, and
getting it out of his pocket, jabbed
it into the snake's body.
After a few thrusts the snake be
came angered and began to wriggle
its head out of the hole again.
Sampson made a lively attack of
the snake’s head, finally cutting it
completely off. The instant itwas
served the neok rose conclusively
in the air and a spout of blood
came full into the frightened man’s
face. He fainted away, and he
thinks he must have remained un
consci jus for over an hour. When he
recovered consciousness thesm-ke
was still coiled around his leg, but
dead. —Pittsburg- Chronicle Tele
